Side yard find, fuel tank question
As an earlier poster said. I have a line on a 89 cab sitting for at least 5 yrs. Tomorrow afternoon my cohort will get a look at it and start in on whether we can make a deal or not.
So I've been poking around looking for info on getting one going again, plan on a flat bed to his shop where we would pull fuel tank and clean it, and drain fuel lines, change filter, test pump, maybe by using it to drain any fuel in tank. What special concerns with the motronic fuel injection after sitting so long, likely seals being shot or something? Brakes, of course. I worry about rat damage to wiring a lot, oil change. We will see if the interior is at all salvageable, it is in Florida and I'm imagining swamp like conditions under those tarps. My buddy has resurrected several cars in like condition, but nothing this advanced. Looking at all the tech articles and searching forums, haven't really found a good comprehensive resurrection guide. Can you guys point me in the right direction? Last question any ideas on how Nasa and PCA view cabs for track days? Did the 89 have any sort of built in protection similar to the later models? If we proceed will share lots of pictures. Has the battery been removed? What does the front trunk area look like. Are you going to try to get it running or just an evaluation on the neglect? The fan area behind the alternator is a great place for rodents to nest. Either remove the Alt/fan or see if you can peak a boroscope in there through the fan blades.
Try a search here on "starting after long term storage" or "barn find" We want to see pics!

Don't know much yet, it's under tarps. Doubt the batts been removed. Thanks for the alt idea we will check there.
Barn find didn't do much but I'll try long term storage. |

Advanced Search titles only for 'commonly' will get you some good ones.
Long term and commonly neglected... For one. I'd post links but I'm on my phone and cannot. |

I can certainly testify to the validity of the thread title. My 914 had something wrong with...well, everything. It sat, according to the owner, for "about 8 years," but it was more like 12 years, with sugar or other contaminents, in the fuel system. Plan on a fuel system cleaning, however extensive it needs, just to evaluate what you've got. Do not waste time trying to do a valve adjustment or leak down test, stalagmites and stalagtites on the valves/valve seats will skew both attempts. It's OK to drain the engine and reservoir oil, and put in no more than ten quarts of a high quality 20w/50 oil.
Install a new battery and perform a few electrical tests, if the car starts (with fresh gasoline), put a volt/ohm meter across the battery and check the charging system at idle and at 2500 rpm. Depending on how the car sounds, replace the tires, replace the brake system flex hoses (one at each caliper), flush the brake and clutch system and re-fill with Castrol LMA or Ate Blue brake fluid. Try to drive the car at least 50-100 miles before attempting a valve adjustment or a leak down test. During the above process you will discover why such a special car has been left to rot; maybe the owner family had serious issues, maybe the car has a bad DME relay, a leaking fuel line in the engine compartment, or bent valves from an over-rev; you'll never know until you've driven it. Good luck!!!

Thanks Peter
All makes sense, main reason it was parked was that the vert top got problematic, they had to use the screw driver method and then something else. There was talk about the canvas having a tear, so that really reenforces my swamp interior concerns. But then again it was started "often" and the owner is supposed to be a responsible guy. Should have more information by tomorrow night. |

reading about fuel tank cleaning there is much talk about the plastic swirl pot in the tank. All mention that it is for CIS tanks, but does the 89 with motronic injection still have this plastic fixture in there to worry about?
Should I just use the information I've found on the various tank cleaning threads for this year? |
