Here is what i think for street use. Any high quality 20w50. Change oil and filter every 3000 miles. The key is keep moisture out of it and keep it clean. When you park it for the winter, change the oil, run it til hot and put away. Start once every two weeks or more often. Get it hot. This helps get rid of any moisture. Before driving in the spring, change oil and filter. Then change every 3000 miles. Oil is cheap compared to a rebuild. Keep it clean, clean, clean. I personally like Castrol or Valvoline or Brad Penn. I think it is more important to change it often. Oh yes, did I say change it often?

I use swepco or BP. I tend to find swepco a little easier to find but since I moved to LA it is easy to get BP. I like the 5 gallon swepco units (19L) over opening 20 individual quarts of BP.

When I attended Bruce Anderson's engine building class it was clear that Mr Woods' was using swepco in 4 cams, 935s, and 917s. Good enough for me.

I'm no expert and I hate to chime in because nowhere is there more BS on any automotive forum than in a motor oil discussion (Except for K&N air filter discussions).....

BUT.... for our 911 engines you want a high ZDDP motor oil. As far as I have read anymore there is virtually NO motor oil that you can buy at your FLAPS is high ZDDP, as modern cars do not require this level of protection. There is a thread here (posted below) with tons of reading....conclusion is any high ZDDP motor oil is ok. Brad Penn and Swepco are the ones that Pelican carries. IIRC Brad Penn is slightly less expensive.

Thanks, guys. No horror stories = good sign. For what it's worth, I understand Swepco is one of the superior products. I had been using Kendall GT1 but haven't been able to find it lately. Plus, I'd like to treat the new cam and rocker surfaces to the top-shelf product. I can get BP shipped for a little less than what I can get the Swepco for at the air-cooled VW hot rod shop in town, but I'm inclined to support the local economy. If all goes well, I'll be filling her up (with break in oil) this weekend and hitting the starter for the first time in 1.5 years.

So I was getting ready to change the oil in my BMW R60/6 and I thought; why not? If BP is good for my SC why not my BMW. Same technology.

Been using Swepco for years but it is expensive and hard to get on the east coast. I'm switching to Valvoline VR1 racing dino oil in the silver bottle. Has all the ZDDP needed and I can get it in 20W50 all day long at O'Reilly's. No problem with Swepco but availability and price force change.

I use Swepco in my 911 and my El Camino. I buy a case at a time right from Swepco. It is delivered to my door the next day since I am close to their factory.

I have used it for many years.
