Steering Doesn't Lock When Ignition Shut Off?

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to the forum, as I just recently purchased my first Porsche, a 911 Carrera coupe. One thing I noticed is that, without even having a key in the ignition I can still turn the steering wheel, and the wheels turn.

Is this normal? I am accustomed to having the steering lock when there is no key in the ignition.

If at all possible, I would contact the PO and see if he/she disabled the locking mechanism. I have read of several on this forum who have disabled it because it was malfunctioning. I would want to know this information if it were my car...

You did turn the wheel 90 degrees left or right, right? It does not lock where you think it would. Ask me how I know

HA, you're right, wolds! I turned it probably 30 degrees and it locked. That's a lot further than I would have thought.

Now I feel like an idiot. Sorry for wasting your time. Geez.

I did the same thing when I got my SC last year. I was getting ready to pull the switch and by accident I realized that you had to turn the wheel to get it to lock. I'm assuming that if I had cracked open the owners manual that it would have enlightened me. Have fun with your new ride. Warren

When in doubt RTFM.....

Be advised that if you had to turn the wheel to lock it, you may have to turn it conjunction with the key.....to unlock and start the engine.

Actually, I had first looked in the owner's manual to see if there was anything about it and there wasn't. I'm kind of surprised, too, as this is the most comprehensive owner's manual I've ever seen.
