Quick Question RE tightening fan belt

I need to do this immediately, as tool just arrived. To make belt tighter, I have to take shim from inside and put it on outside, correct?

4 in, 1 out made it right.

It depends, oem belt 3 in 3 out, new.

Conti belt, 1 in 5 out.

It appears you are missing a shim.

Bentley says you should be able to move the belt 10-15mm at the midpoint between the two pulleys. Remember, it won't reach full tension until you torque that bolt.

I thought it was supposed to be 5 total. I had 6 but took one off.

6 is correct , if you use less you can mess up the shoulder for the nut and then get to post in the Damn it thread...

Thanks for all the replies. Anyone know why Wayne says 5 in his book?

There are a few items in the book that are considered to be not the norm. Six is the norm.....also you can go thru the dash ports after removing gauges to move the wipers to the passenger side park position.

Bentley has some glaring errors.....but Wayne's is more or less correct.

You could email Wayne and ask why he recomends 5 shims.

Always wondered how to do the passenger side wiper park.

There are more than a few threads on it. Pull the clock and the gauge to the left. Using a strong flashlight locate the wiper motor and arm.

Pull the nut, relocate the wipers to the passenger parked location, tighten down and test. There are a few gotchas that are recommended.....do a search. I did it a few years ago....I used a single longer reachvwiper for awhile. Didn't like it. I went back to a dual....ask Draco how that worked out....%^)
