Wayne,
Have the car facing us. Then use animation to make the headlights flash. Now we're talkin'.:) |
Just don't open up a fast food restraunt with the same name.
|
If you'd come to me with the identity kit you currently use before you'd launched the website, I would have said, "Porsches aren't funny. Owners of these cars buy them (whether or not they're willing to admit it) to project power, exclusiveness and individuality." I would have gone for a graphic identity that reflected that, and didn't draw so much attention to itself.
But being that things are the way they are, I say: stay the course. The graphic is fine (although a red car might be better). Pelican has very widespread brand name and even graphics-related brand identification, now -- and that's worth its weight in gold. Put more simply: it ain't broke, so I wouldn't agonize too much about fixing it. |
If you're going to do a graphic identity shift, I'd go for a more stylized/abstract pelican and have it the same for all pages. The differentiation for section woudl be either in the form of text or another icon balancing the pelican.
My $0.02. The current pelican does have a bit of charm though... |
I personally think it's fine. This message board has it's own prestige and reputation and it sounds like it took years to achieve that honorable status......so why change that??!!
|
Wayne - I just read this thread! Do you feel like you had one to many bong hits now. These kinds of questions will only confuse you. I speak from experience.
|
Looks fine to me also.
However, I'd probably hang a K27-7200 turbocharger out the back (and make it visible of course) and also animate the GIF/JPEG such that Mr.PeliDude smokes them up and takes off into the distance :D |
Doesn't sync with the topic. IMO Pelican driving away with thumbs up does not = photo gallery. Useable for something else however.

why don't you just hire a professional graphic design artist who can give you the exact look that you want your company to portray to the customer? They will be able to help you with company persona, image, etc....
by asking us P-owners/drivers, you'll only get more confused....because you'll get (and probably have already) very contradicting suggestions.... |
Can't leave well enough alone, had to play around with the car color, I guess I just like red cars:

Is this dumb? (Wayne asked)
No! Anything to do with a 356 is cool. The Pelicano obviously has great taste in cars. |
Once you've established brand name recoginition you've gotta stick with it.
Look at Intel, for instance: Pentium. How ridiculous is that name? They called it the "Five-ium" because a court ruled that they couldn't trademark a number (after 486). Ten years later they're still using the same silly name, with numbers tacked onto the end. Pentium IV? What is that? Nineium??? Yet, that's what people remember: Pentium. Now I'm not saying "Pelican Parts" is silly...in fact it "falls trippingly from the tongue" (yes, that's a misquote). And Mr. Pelicano is a decent mascot. It's not like he's a talking Chihuahua or anything. Milk it for all it's worth. |
Gotta be red. I know pelicans don't have thumbs, but it's a good touch -- means he's a happy motorin' pelican. I dunno about the hat and goggles -- connotates me too much of an english influenced sports car buff, in which case Mr. Pelican should be holding a wrench in his hand.

I have to say honestly I'm not keen on the whole Pelican idea. But then again I'm no marketing guru.

A quote from one of my favorite movies, "FLY PELICAN FLY!!"

Hey, Wayne -
The Pelican graphic is part of the company now, and belongs with whatever you do to enhance the site. The discussion about the cartoon pelican not being copacetic (my $5 word :p ) with the Porsche image should have been done a looong time ago before your wonderful company had become established. I do agree that it would be more appropriate to the subject (Photo Gallery) to have the Pelican pose with his/her car in the graphic. Being from SoCal and familiar with the subject - a more realistic graphic may be to have the subject pelican leave a deposit on said car - just change the car to a fly yellow Ferrari, please! Kevin |
Wayne:
The pelican is your trademark. Stick to it. However, I don't see any connection with pictures and the pelican with his thumb up. How about hanging a camera around his neck, or something else that relates to photography. I think you are on the right track and appreciate you allowing us to voice our opinions. Just remember, it is just my opinion, and nothing more than that. Eric 83SC |
It's a little dippy, but that's the draw. I like it the way it is. I'd buy a tee shirt with that too:p
|
It looks good to me, the only suggestion I would have would be to have the Pelican taking a picture of a sexy female pelican laying on the hood. I know, Pretty sick imagination.
|
It looks stupid, which is fine to me.
