Parts Confusion
I have 1976/1977 Carrera 3.0 engine which is basically the turbo engine from that period w/o the turbocharger. Mine also has Weber carbs instead of the original CIS.
It's a great setup but sometimes ordering parts can be confusing (for me) because the typical US engine for this period, 74-77 was a 2.7L. I'm not sure, but the 76/77 Carrera 3.0 with the aluminum crankcase may have been a non-US model. Let's take something as basic as ignition parts for example. The Pelican catalog shows one spark plug for a 911 between (1969-77), but a different plug for the 76-89 911 turbo. The 3.0L engine does not show up until the 78 911SC. In some cases it is obvious, but for a lot of basic stuff the 3.0L is not listed for 76-77. Should I just order the turbo version part? Thanks. |

I would call them in the morning. Sometimes info gets left off of parts. It happens with most sites. They would probably want to know about it if they left something out.

Thanks. I hope I didn't give the impression that this is a Pelican specific thing. Unless I'm missing something nobody shows a naturally aspirated 3.0L engine for 1976-1977.

Something isn't right with the "Carrera 3.0 engine which is basically the turbo engine from that period w/o the turbocharger" explanation. The turbo was very low compression and would be a really bad choice for a normally aspirated motor.
I can see that it would make it very hard to choose certain parts because it really isn't clear what you have. Do you have an engine type number or the engine number? Maybe someone can figure out what it is.

You make a good point. I was sort of paraphrasing Wikipedia:
Porsche 911 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia If you scroll down to "911 Carrera 3.0 (1976–1977)" you will find a description. Maybe I should start again. What I do know is that it is a '77 3.0L Euro engine that was professionally rebuilt for racing (type stamp on the case is 930/12). The engine was really done up so maybe stock parts don't even apply. So if you had an older, race prepped 911 engine that did not fit the standard parts catalogs what would you do for ignition parts, filters, etc.? I can go with what is currently installed, for example I pulled a spark plug and found a Champion N11YC, but I don't have a service history and would prefer something more definitive. I was thinking maybe a part number off of the ignition might help? Any advice is appreciated. |
