? for Atlanta area Pelicans
Hi
I noticed alot of Atlanta Pelicans. I bent some valves in my SC motor and need a top end rebuild (at least). I was wondering if you folks knew any body who does motor work in their garage/on the side. Funds are a little tite and I would rather not pay shop over head for a repair this large. Thanks in advance |

Sound like you want DIY prices without DYI! Really, doing it yourself can be very rewarding and you will start to know your car like never before.
Saying that, I am quite sure everyone on this BBS will guide you should you have questions along the way, and should you require "hands on" help I for one would be willing to come over, drink your beer and offer suggestions- although I have never done a job like that. I would think you will find other local Pelicans who could offer more experienced assistance- most times we are a pretty friendly group. Wonder how far off Wayne's book is....

Thanks Sean, come over any time I even have a beer fridge in the garage. I would love to do it myself but I think the economics are bad, I think I would need to buy almost $1000 worth of Porsche specialty tools tools + machine work + parts. IF I screw something up or miss something I might have to buy alot of the stuff twice, or worse. I just bought my dream a few weeks ago and planned on accumulating the tools over time. I would be comfortable R&Ring the motor, suspension, AC, etc. but the internal motor stuff is a little scary. I have changed cams, clutches etc. etc. in British and Japanese cars but the risks are far less on those cars if you make a mistake.
Another thought I had was buying a set of remaned heads (currently available on Rennlist classifieds) and swapping them but I would still prefer some one who has done it before to actually do the work. I might feel different is I had Waynes new book, is their a waiting list?? ![]() I look forward to meeting you and seeing the Targa. |

Count me in as another metro Pelicanhead that would be willing to offer a hand. I'm not a mechanic, but I have played one on TV....I'm up near Lawrenceville.

I own a cab w/o a rollbar (yet) so the autox is a no go for me. Did go up to the montains though.... Doug (R22tech), Paul (73 911 T- super sweet car) and I did a 3+/- hour run- had a blast. We are going up again in the next month, but will go early Sunday to avoid heat and traffic.

E-
How ya doin? If you cannot do the valve work at home then let me suggest you contact Bob Sanderson at Performance Imports just off Peachtree Industrial and 285 (770/457-5550). If you take the heads off yourself, you might be surprised on how he would be able to work with you. He has been a very fair and reasonable individual with me over the years and he comes highly recommended. I have tried them all in Atlanta and he is top on my list. Their are dozens of Atlanta Pelican Heads around, and Doug our Social Chairman, will probably be setting up another mountain drive this fall. The last one was fantastic. Hey Doug are you listening?! My expertise goes as far as tuneups, brakes and general stuff and I need to dive into the more technical end of the spectrum on these cars so I can lend a hand as well. Regards Bob 73.5T |

Once my father and brother finish with rebuilding my brother's 911 I might be able to borrow the factory service manuals. It is for a 74 911, but I am pretty sure it would apply to your engine as well. It really isn't that hard to work on engines once you just break down and do it. Head work I would leave to a pro. The crank I would also consider having checked by a pro, but it is pretty obvious if you have wear on the crank by looking at it or the bearings and then using a vernier caliper.
As far as special tools, they are really helpful, yes, but most are not really necessary. |

Thanks again to all
It turns out I have a friend who used to be a factory trained Porsche mechanic (even speaks German). I think he is willing to help me take it apart and do the inspection, recommend parts/machine work and then come back when I am ready to reassemble. Sounds like a dream come true!! And he still has most of his tools!! If I go this route is any body interested in coming over and seeing his advice on the inspection/reinstallation first hand?? I was thinking it would be really cool to have the motor on the stand and have him show us how it "feels" when the valves are adjusted correctly - valve gapping is so subjective. I will keep you posted, sounds like Sanderson is the way to go for any head work. |

Ditto on Sanderson - they do great work and are priced fairly.

Ditto on Sanderson at Performance Imports, and I would certainly like to be around when removal/dissassembly/reassembly occurs.

Sounds like a fun way to spend some time... so long as everyone shows up in their Porsche so we can compare. But no touching with greasy mits!
Sorry to all about missing Coffee 'n Cars. Turns out I was booked into two (!) birthday parties with the kids - hate it when the wife does that.

Hi E,
Read your post and would like to extend a helping hand. I did a engine rebuild on my 78 SC Targa year before last - disassembled it completely. If you would like, I have quite a selection of tools which I can contribute if you decide to take on the task yourself. The best thing would be to drop the engine, then disassemble. I have the floor jacks, floor stands, dolly for the engine, engine hoist if needed along with a helping hand. If you are interested, list which weekend you want to do it. The engine drop should take about 3 hrs, from then on, its a cakewalk. Steve |

Steve,
I was thinking about volunteering your services, so I'm glad you saw this post. I think it would be great if the Atlanta folks met up again and worked this project! We'll have to schedule a road trip soon after of course...

Count me in on the "unskilled labor" part of the project. Hope the cars and doughnuts went well because you missed one hell of an auto-x last weekend. There were so few cars there (@40) that we all got to run 6 times. BTW you don't need a roll bar for auto-x, just DE. Maybe next time I can (or someone on this board) can best Mike's time. Sean, Doug?? I need some help!!! Cheers. Ray
