'87 911SC CV Inner Boot Replacement
Concerning the replacement of an inner (nearest transmission) CV boot on a 1987 911.
For clarity, inner refers to the joint nearest the trans while outer refers to the joint nearest the wheel/stub axle. I'm a little confused as to the procedure and also which boots are replaceable, one comment from Nick @ pelican 101 projects article states the outer boot is not available, but then the article contradicts itself earlier when it says the inner CV joint is integrated and not available separately but then in the picture of the axle it says the outer. From Pelican Technical Article: Replacing CV Joints - 911 (1968-89) - 930 Turbo (1975-89)... From the article:, I believe the following statement is incorrect. "...The inner CV joints are an integrated part of the stub axle, and are not available separately..."From the top picture of the complete axle: This sounds correct to me: "...the outer CV joint is not available separately, but must be purchased as a complete axle. This is because the joint is integrated into the stub axle and cannot be separated..."From the comments: This sounds correct to me: "...I believe the article says the outer boot is not available because it is attached to the entire shaft. The whole axle should be replaced at this point. - Nick at Pelican Parts..."Also, I found this on the CV boot parts section of the pelican site here: Porsche 911 & Carrera Axles & Bearings - Page 1 "...CV Boot cracked or leaking? Replace it with a new one and keep dirt, debris and small animals out of your CV joints! The replacement process is the same as if you were removing an entire CV joint. In fact, you need to remove the joint in order to replace the boot..."Thanks in advance Last edited by logray; 06-23-2013 at 10:54 AM.. |

I just replaced all 4 boots this afternoon on my 1995 993.Inners and outers are the same. I have the engine trans out to replace the clutch. I expect the 87 is similar.
I had lots of room so I removed the shafts from the car. Undo the large axle nut and drive the shaft out of the hub. Use a punch in the centre to avoid damaging the threads. Then knock the sheetmetal "cup" off the inner joint.A large circlip is on the end of the shaft under the cup. With the circlip removed the inner joint should pull off the shaft. One side did the other was stuck I needed to help it with a hammer and screwdiver from the boot side. (I had already released the boots and slid them up the shaft. When the inner joint is off you then slide the boots off the shaft. Slide on new boots and inject the grease into the joint and boot before clamping the boots tight. Reinstall the inner joint and circlip. (One side needed help with a hammer again.) The boot kits include a new boot, sheetmetal cup ,circlip and grease. Once the inner joint is off I would always replace both boots.

If I remember correctly, when I did mine, all four boots were the same. The first side was a little time consuming because I hadn't done it before but the second side went really fast. That was quite the easy DIY project. Now swapping the axle shafts from left to right is part of my offsesson preparation every winter. I read once that doing helps to extend the life of the CVs.

Guys,
I have a 1985 Carrera that needs new boots. In the process of replacing the boots, the new ones I got from our host are 'beefier' than the ones I am replacing. The new ones have a silver metal finish and the old ones have a goldish color. It appears as though I need a longer bolt to put the new boots on. The std bolt length that is on the car is 8X50mm, I think I need 8X60mm to put the new ones on. However the host doesnt sell or suggest they are needed with the replacement kit. Did you run into this at all, when you were working on yours? |

Logray,
I replaced both outer boots on my '87. A straightforward job. These axles are the same as the '88.

My understanding of those Carrera axles (with the integral stub axles) is that both boots are replaceable, but only the inner CV joint is replaceable, not the outer joint.
Also, an '87 is a Carrera, not an SC. Last edited by Ferrino; 11-27-2013 at 09:47 PM.. |

I have a new driveshaft and plan on tackling this project tomorrow. The car is an 87 Carrera. Does anyone know if it is a 32mm socket or 30mm? I assume it needs to be a deep well socket also?
Thanks Rick

Rick,
I use a 3/4 drive, assisted by several feet of hollow fence post to remove the nut easily. When removing the inner joint fasteners, put it in neutral and use a piece of pipe across the studs and bearing against the floor to immobilize the axle. I use a 1/2 inch drive with long extensions so that I'm outside the wheel while removing those allens. Beats crawling under. The nut is 32mm.

Thanks Ned. I appreciate the help, especially like the idea of using the pipe. Happy holidays!
