Unhappy A few more video clips.

Just a few more clips posted on the metro NY website. The flying Porsche is a great one. Nice to watch, just as long as they aren't filmed from my in car camera! http://www.metronypca.org/Video/audio-video.asp

Porsche Crest Climbing over Hood

I talked to the driver of the white car last weekend at a Metro NY rally. If you think it looks scary from this angle, you can imagine what it was like in the car. We all saw the yellow car in the paddock, completely trashed, broken rear window, right side heavily damaged, wheels at impossible camber settings.

And the thing is, this wasn't the only incident at the end of the main straight at LRP. The funny thing is, there's plenty of racing room down there, including an extension of the main straight for runoff, and you could easily fit 3.5 cars across the width of the track on Big Bend. But the temptation to get inside and "dive bomb" a pass on the inside is irresistable: my first lap out on Hoosiers I locked up all four and went sliding toward another 911 running wide, until I, ahem, had the presence of mind to take my concrete foot off the brake pedal and drive through the turn.

Fortunately everybody is OK and the cars should be fixed by now.

I would guess it is like any car accident. The guy with the damage on the front of his car is at fault. ??

The flying one is too much. The front got light coming over the crest and it just took flight. I wonder how fast that car was going.

Porsche Crest Aftermath

The National Steward has already ruled on this and I'm not going to give my own view as to who was at fault etc. But my personal view, based on watching the incident firsthand and on video, is that one car was inside and did not have overlap (a sailing term, what I mean is his front wheels were not in the middle of the other car's door) by the apex, and was braking late into the corner to "dive-bomb" a pass on the other car, but the other car, not seeing the first car abeam, went for the apex, resulting in the incident.

This is my own opinion and may not necessarily reflect the views of the PCA. Obviously some guys are pretty pi$$ed about this and I'm loath to get in the middle except to say that it could have been any one of us in the same situation and I'm glad everybody is OK.

Here's a shot of cars coming into Big Bend in another heat, you can see what the line looks like.

This is really an HO-scale slot-car track!

But really, it's the loss of perspective caused by the zoom lense.

That bridge doesn't go over the track, it goes over the creek next to the track. What you can't see, is left of the picture are the stairs that go up and over the track. IIRC, the bridge over the track is covered on both sides while the bridge over the creek is not.
