brand new DME relay installed - car won't start

EDITED TO ADD:
All ended well. I contacted Pelican Parts, they gave me a RMA and I sent the defective relay back. PP sent me a new one, which works perfectly. Thanks PP!

1987 911 Carrera

I purchased the Porsche factory DME relay from Pelican (911-618-154-01-OEM) and was planning on switching out the old, still functional relay as a bit of preventative maintenance.

With the new DME relay installed, the car will crank but not start. With the old DME relay installed, the car starts no problem.

Is there a way to check the functionality of the new DME relay?
Also, the old one has 00 as the last two numbers, while the new one is 01.

Here's the two relays (new one plugged in, old one sitting on top of DME box):

it could be just a baad realy to check you can take apart with small screwdriver pry cover off gently inside there are two contacts...one controls spark when key is turned on other runs fuel pump...you can look at the contacts and see if they move when key is turned on...dont know if i explained that very well anyone give him a better description than that???? mike

there should be 2 coils you could buzz (check continuity). one has a diode in the path so try both polarities. Contact pelican or whoever sold it to you and get a replacement/money back.

They shouldn't, the mortality rate of electrical devices is well known to be high on initial energization.
