what did i do??
car is a 73 911e. I just put the motr and trans back in the car. motor had a top end rebuild. tonite while putting on my c.v joints, the axles were spinning while I was tightening them up. so I put the car in gear. but the axles still spin. what gives? what did I do wrong? or what didn't I do? I hope I wont have to drop the motor again.

If the other side spins in the opposite direction, that is normal for a non-limited slip differential.
Have someone apply the brakes while tightening. |

really? I thought if you put it in gear, the car wouldn't move. I tried it on my 85 3.2 and tried to push it while it was in gear, and it didn't move. this might be a good thing. I hope you are right

I assume you have both wheels off the ground, car jacked up, while connecting the CVs on the 73.
Wayne's tech article: Pelican Technical Article: Replacing CV Joints - 911 (1968-89) - 930 Turbo (1975-89) "You may need to drop the car down onto the ground in order to tighten to this spec without turning the wheels." Instead of dropping car, since I use a lift, I usually put someone in the car and have them set parking brake and push on brake pedal. then they can release and you can turn by hand. |

yes car was up on jacks, I used the parking brakes to tighten the cv joints. I just thought if I put it in gear the wheels shouldn't turn. this makes me feel a lot better. I really didn't want to drop and reinstall the motor.

I just replaced the CV joints on my 77 and the wheels spun while in gear. I used the ebrake to stop the wheels from spinning.
