2.7 to 3.0 Conversion
So I have the 2.7 pulled and the freshly built 3.0 (Whale Tail Canada) prepping to go in. I have my 2.7 CIS bolted to the 3.0l motor.
WT also sent me an engine wiring harness from a 3.0 motor too. I have all the sensors wired and connections made but can not find the wire that should go to the distributor. I have the harness that takes the 6 pin CDI box. What am I missing? Also, my existing harness plug is destroyed and not even there. The wires were plugged directly into the other wires on the other side of the main connector. Can someone who did this conversion before please tell me which ones are supposed to match each other? My main problem is I'm located in Newfoundland and there is no one around here that is familiar with these cars. |

I may be able to help you using the factory wiring diagrams.
Need to know the year of your car '77 ??. Year of the 3.0 and it's harness. Type of Distributor you are using for the 3.0. Came with engine or trying to use your old one?(Spins the wrong way?) Green wire from 6 pin connector goes to distributor if it is '78 or newer. Some pictures of what you are working with would really help as well.

Yes, some photos and more info would be a great help. There are more good mechanics on the "Rock" than you imagine.

The green wire for the distributor should come off the harness where the wires for the coil and the oil temp and pressure come out. You may just have a black timer jr. connector (same as on cis devices) that plugs into the $75 green wire that pelican sells.
What year is the harness from? What year is the distributor? (Can't read on my phone) |

Can't find the coil wire either, might have to remove the whole thing and take a pic.

Sounds like the best thing to do. Almost looks like a '76 turbo harness I re-built recently with the rubber cover over the CDI connector. How many slots in the plastic piece in the rubber boot?
6 or 8? What year is the engine? |

What color is the connector you hooked up to your WUR? it should be grey. looks like the black one for the green wire to the distributor.
I think your idea of removing the harness and laying it out would be the best bet. Then I can identify everything for you. Email some good pictures to me at powellgillam@hotmail.com

2.7 liter to 3.0 liter CIS conversion........
Newfie,
Are you using the 2.7 CIS system including the smaller diameter intake runners on your new 3.0 liter engine? Why not install the correct CIS unit for your bigger? Trade or sell your 2.7 CIS unit and use the '78-'79 CIS unit. Tony |

Bill,
I've asked a few questions that you haven't answered. Year of the motor? (Can't quite make out the stamping by the oil sender) Very important! What color is the connector you hooked up to your WUR? It should be grey, looks like the black one for the green wire to the distributor? You'll find that answering the questions people ask helps those that are willing to help you. As I just built a harness for a '77 yesterday...!!! I can tell you there are wiring differences for the 14 pin plug and the 6 pin CDI that need to be made so your Tach will work (among other things). I have the wiring diagram open in front of me as I type this! To be honest that harness looks like it has been hacked, spliced, sliced and diced a few times and may never work. (Get a refund or a good one from WT for that) Is the insulation cracking as badly as the protective wrap is? The actual color coding with dots instead of stripes tells me it may be an older than '78 harness. Engine harness swaps from '78 on into earlier cars require harness modifications. Same with earlier engine harnesses into later cars. (Just helped a guy wire a '78 3.2ss motor into an 87 body all through e-mail) I can tell you how to do it yourself once we establish what year of harness you have and if it will work. Or, I could build you a new harness that would be plug and play if you want. It would ship by this Friday at the latest, if you answer some more specific questions and do a little more picture work for me. Here's a link to my harness building ad. You are missing a bunch of connectors, the CIS and injector connector wires have been spliced incorrectly.
Those are the coil wires and Green wire connector in your last picture. Honestly it looks like junk. I know these harnesses inside out, and I wouldn't use that one again. Take a picture of the CDI connector on the end. How many terminals does it have 6 or 8? I really think you may have a modified turbo harness due to the rubber boot on the cdi connector and the insulation on the thermo switch wires. That is the VR connector and your 14 pin connector case is broken, so who knows what is what in there. Based on the engine serial number, It looks like you have a 3.0 ROW '79 case with the intake larger ports, so Tony was on the right track saying you need the larger intake system. That motor will be starving for air and fuel with the smaller 2.7 intake runners. Probably run "ok", but won't perform like it should. Here's a thought, Put carbs or EFI on it? I've seen a couple of large port intake systems for sale in the classifieds lately, maybe search for one.

Here's a couple of pictures of a new custom '77 harness I built for a carbureted engine yesterday, with separate CDI Harness as requested.
All new rubber parts, connectors, wire etc. This is what you want on a new engine! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks,
I have to speak to the supplier tomorrow. No problems with the CIS as the motor was built with the smaller port heads, everything matches. |

Update for my new Newfie pal...
![]() Bill received a good harness from the engine builder, and then with some emails, some testing, a few parts and a phone call, I was able to provide him with the information he needed to modify his '77 chassis wiring to accept the '78 harness as a plug and play unit. ![]() Really just needed to move 2 wires around and rebuild the 14 pin connector on the fuse panel! I'm holding you to the oceanfront stay some year Bill, and the Screech!... ![]() ![]()
