Build From Scratch - What would you create?
I've been thinking seriously about building a dream car from scratch (if I can ever find the time). Thinking from 1965 all the way up to 1998, I'm trying to come up with the ultimate car from both a performance and vintage perspective.
Now, twin-turbo performance aside, I think that I would want something that was semi-vintage looking, yet not lacking in performance. Something unique too would be very, very cool. Reliability would be vital too. The 2.7RS would be a natural thought, but a lot of people have done this. So, I think I came up with the ultimate: a 1974 3.0L RSR Replica. Anyone out there done this already? -Wayne |
Wayne, turbocharging aside, a lightweight 3.0 RSR Replica would be awesome.
However, I'd probably go with the latest techno, largest capacity factory engine I can get a hold of (3.6L) and work that sucker extensively. Maybe a 3.8L BIG Bore kit, TWM Throttle Bodies (trumpet style), Motec Injection, lightweight internals, blueprinted & balanced ;) |

Wayne,
Did you say "2.7" and "reliability" in the same sentence??? There is a God!!! Finally someone is on our side!!! IN YOUR FACE SCWDP!!!! Sorry, I got a little carried away.:D |
CRAP! I just reread your original post...it was TWO sentences...

Wayne,
If you are going to go, go whole hog... 917 Longtail.... You COULD outrun the CHP radio with that puppy. |
I was thinking a tube frame 550 spyder (Beck or similiar) with updated porsche mechnicals - maybe a high revving 2.4 or 3.4L
Or take a 1990 or so C2 (which you can get for cheap these days) strip it to the bone and install a 3.8L or 4.0 L bomber of a motor! coil overs, fiberglass doors and fenders and big rubber...vroooooooom. I guess if I was in California - I would want to keep it to 1973 or below... so here goes.. How about this? http://ww2.hemmings.com/dealers/phot...t/1973por1.jpg Porsche RSR 1973 This ex-Richard Petty, George Follmer IROC race car won the 1980 Trans Am event at Road America driven by Monte Shelton. Full, no expense spared. 1998 rebuild with 3.5-liter "High Butterfly, dyno-tested engine. Close-ratio trans, high performance. $175,000 |
With a little literary license on your original question, here is my “built from scratch” 911. It would be the ultimate Q-ship.
1.) Pre ’73 body. Coupe with sunroof. Rust free, and properly prep’ed, of course. A/C is optional. 2.) A 3.2 with injection, massaged to increase power and reliability, but must have smooth idle and reasonable muffler. Fender mounted oil cooler. 3.) Stiffen body to taste, Bilstein shocks, sway bars, etc. 4.) Lowered with bump steer kit. 5.) No tail. 6.) Roll the fenders and mount black centered 7”X16” Fuch’s with rubber as wide as possible. 7.) RS door panels. 8.) Black paint with black trim. No bright work anywhere except the polished lips on the Fuch’s. 9.) Black interior. Early Recaro Sport seats, or aftermarket look-a-likes if originals are not comfortable to your build. 10.) H-4 headlights with 80/100 bulbs. 11.) At least upgrade to S brakes or Big Reds if budget not shot. 12.) 930 steering wheel is a must. 13.) Stereo is optional. Should be capable of staying with most of today's ricer's and yet too flashy! :D |
Wayne,
The '74 RSR is one of my favorites too, but I feel that the proper 917 type center lock wheels are essential to the look. However nobody ever does the wheels correctly. However now there seems to be an option for these wheels. http://www.jongbloedwheels.com/910wheel.html Yes this is a 13" but apparently Jongbloed will be making larger diameters. You'd need 15" to be accurate but tires would be hard to find. Perhaps he can make a set of 16" ot 17". |

I would settle for a 934 though |
RSR exterior, 3.8 liter N/A sportcams, regeared 6spd, semitube frame, 964 RS interior(assuming this is not a race car), coil overs all around, 964 3.6T brakes all around, some nice light Kinesis, Fikse or Lindsey Fuchs, 9&11x17 or 18 It would look something like this
http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...0001_small.jpg Only streetable, In Calif you probably need to start with an early belly button tub due to the emissions laws. |
Ted,
Wayne said "build from scratch" .... no need to find one, just start welding. Joe |
How about a 904, 6, 10 replica with a big honking motor!
|
Joe,
I ain't that good with a welder. I have to start with something predone. |
73 coupe
3.6L motor 7.31 gearing (might come with the car) H4's 993 interior Windshield with antenna built in Ducktail (ala mark wilson) RS Body (Flares, Bumbers FR & R) Ruf Wheels (if you can find some) Ruf Side Mirrors SC Outer Rocker Panels NO Chrome Anywhere Triple Black Paint or Audi Nogaro Blue Carrera Script and bumper stripes in Charcoal Grey Suspension setup for aggressive street, lowered to a nice level I trust you to make any upgrades and improvements from there... |
Give me an "Arrrrr!"
Wayne -
John Cramer and I were discussing this very issue on Monday night, and the result was a 911R clone. 210hp out of 2.0 liters in an 1800 lb. car -- that would be very very cool. You could check the "Unique", "Vintage" and "Set World Speed Records" boxes. I know that last one wasn't actually listed as one of your criteria, but I assumed it was implied. It would have to be white, though. Best, JP |
550 replica running "full house" 3.6 SmileWavy
|
1. 908, 910, 917... all with tig welded Al frame and early mag blocks slpiced into flat 8's or f-12.
2. 50's-60's era special with tube frame independent susp. all around, small block ford and 5spd trans. Oh and a hand beaten Al body of my own design to hopefully mix all the best features of a few of my favorite cars into one. No AC, radio, heater, wipers, etc,... just a race car with plates....:D |
Modern tech 904 replica with 3,8 993 engine :D
Seriously, Jeremy964 mentioned it. An early (cheap to buy) 964 and engine/gearbox from a 993. |
I vote for the Spyderhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif Very cool ridehttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

953 Replica but with a good heater.

I AGREE WITH KHYDEN,
CTR YELLOWBIRD..... ERIC 78SC:D |
-69 through 72 tub (early tub for weight and wheel base or 72 for the oil tank)
-stock fenders and flares -Varioram 3.6 (stock to simplify matters). If you must have something more exotic, a 3.6 with electromotive, …) -Headers to a factory looking sport muffler -Early style Recaro sport seats -Big reds (painted black to keep them “confidential”) -Custom offset Fuch’s based wheels to allow for the calipers -SRP sway bars -Close ratio steering rack -center fill gas tank -RS spoiler (to allow for a large cooler) cooling aside, I’d go 911R That should net an approx 2000 pound car with 290-320 HP with tons of torque, unreal reliability and stopping power to go with it. Then I’d put an emblem reading “911 PRS” (Pelican RennSport). I’ll build one of this one day. |
Anyone else thought of coil-on-plug ignition?
I'm looking into it for my 69S. I figured it would clean up the engine bay and let me use crank-fired ignition for acuracy and reliability. Bob |
934, complete with water to air intercooler.
Not a Targa though.:D Tom |
Dream P-car?
Of this there is no doubt in my mind, Wayne. It would be a 356 Speedster, with Gary Emory "Outlaw" styling elements, and a Polopolus flat-4 with.....turbo in the engine bay. Dream on dudes...... |
I have to go with any variation of the 904, 906, 907, 908 or 917 contingent.
Heck, if I had one of those bodies I really wouldn't care what motor was in it as long as she ran. |
Well, speaking for myself... I allready have....But I really like what John Walker is doing..with that BUG..:p
My next project is going to be a 914-6 for my son.. He's pretty stoked about it. Jorge (Targa Dude) |
John Cramer and I were discussing this very issue on Monday night, and the result was a 911R clone. 210hp out of 2.0 liters in an 1800 lb. car -- that would be very very cool.
:D heheheh I am almost there my car started at ~2100, and Im targeting less than #1800 and at least 200 from my 2.2 :p |
A spyder with a 3.6. 'Nuff said. SmileWavy
|
I'd need 3 cars to complete my dreams, 1st a real 917 with a liscense plate somehow, a GT1 also with a plate, and for my non-porsche needs I'll take an original GT40 with a modernized injected twin-turbo 5.0 engine. All this of course will require diplomatic immunity, the most vital part of the dream. Of course I wouldn't mind squeezing a 993TT motor into my '66 :D
|
Any of the above mentioned cars with a 3.2 or 3.5 liter MFI engine like Kurt Starnes and P. Thomas have...
|
Outside of the 'unobtainium' 917 dream requiring 7-figure expenditures ...
'67 911R with 'hillclimb' geared 915 and 3.0 MFI, 1800 lbs ... '74 RS 3.0, 'airport' geared 915, MFI 3.4, 2000 lbs ... '66 906 replica, based on used Formula car chassis, 'Nurburgring' geared 915, MFI 3.0, 1500 lbs ... |
I'm with Doug Z. Get one of these...http://www.partsobsolete.com/images/polo2
|
there you have it. a 550 spyder with an emory 4 cylinder. what could be cooler?
|
I agree with Warren. "911R"
Bobby |
If I only had the cash...
These would be the projects (clones) I would consider:
`67 R `73 RS. `73 RSR 2.8. `74 RSR 3.0. If I had to pick one, it would probably be the `74 RSR 3.0. IMO, if you do decide on an early RSR project, you gotta go "all the way", with the engine (twin plug, slide valve injection, rods, cams, headers/megaphones, etc.). I think it would also be cool to replicate one of the early racing liveries like Jagermeister or Martini. The `94 RSR 3.8 is pretty appealing too, if you are considering a semi-modern car. I have actually seen a few factory cars (not projects/clones) for sale in Europe for around $75k. By the time you are finished with an early RSR project, you might have close to the same, or more $$ invested anyway. Also, just an FYI: There is a FACTORY `74 RSR 3.0 (correct engine, trans, suspension, mag wheels, etc.) for sale up here in my neck of the woods for $110K. I belive it just needs some finish work and paint. |
What if you flipped a 3.0 w E cams and MFI / G50 so it was mid engined...
in a strippy 69T, around 1850- 1950#s, with tiny flares, maybe 6's and 7's (must remain stealthy) fiberglass split nose front and RS rear bumpers... plexi windows all around, corduroy on the seats and rubber mats instead of carpets... bilsteins, 930 brakes.... kind of an "aged patina" paintjob.... |
