tail rubber treatment

Hi all, today was the day I decided to try using Vaseline on the rubber pieces on my car.
After applying on the tail, rear bumperettes, and the front smile the car sat in the sun for a couple of hours.
One thing I noticed was the tail got so hot I kept re-applying Vaseline and it would be absorbed by the rubber tail. Here are some pics during and after.
I also masked the quarters because the Vaseline would drip on the quarter panels.

Looks great but petrolieum jelly eats away rubber over time versus silicone from my understanding. Hence the reason as to why peeps use stuff like Gummiphledge (silicone)

brian it looks good !

i have doen many how to's on applying petroleum jelly to bring the rubber back from the dead in the body and paint forums .
NO it does nothing to the rubber but make it look good for a long time and unlike the spray on products it will stand up to the weather and washing .
it's for bring it back to life not really for your weekly washing and spray wax cleaning . with that you would use your quick detailing product on .

you should not be smearing the PJ on the rubber you should be applying it in a heavy even coat .
you apply it when the part is cool heat the thing up good all day in the sun or heat lamps then let it cool back down and wipe it clean .
you may have to apply it like that for two or three day if the rubber is real bad .

yes it is in many porsche model cars owners manuals along with some other car makers manuals .

I thought Porsche's recommendation on the PJ was for the Fuchs wheels. Learn something new every day...

I've used the Vaseline on my Fuchs, all the rubber,my targa top and the targa bar. Made everything look like new. It's time consuming but it works well. Did it over a year ago and everything but the Fuchs still looks great. Fuchs collect brake dust and need a lot of cleaning

So if it doesn't harm the rubber in any way, could you also use it on old plastic knobs, plastic trim pieces on old stereos, etc. How about in the motor compartment for old hoses, fuse box covers, wiring etc.? Also, if you're using it on rubber body trim and it gets on paint, can you just wipe it off?

The rubber on my tail is rough and weathered on a couple spots. Is PJ something that can address this issue?

I applied back to black rubber treatement on it a couple times, it looks decent but still rough to the touch in places.

Cool. What is the best way to apply it? With a rag, sponge, or what?

I applied it when cool however once the sun heated the rubber the PJ turned to a liquid, so I kept applying. I'm happy with the result.
The tail is new however the lip had something applied to it (not sure what) and it's rough to the touch in a couple of spots.
