Unhappy Caliper Piston help

Hi folks,

I've been in the garage all afternoon doing rotors and pads. The first three went fine, but I can't push the capliper pistons back far enough on the last. Its the right front. I'm using the wood stick method from Wayne's book and have broken 3 pieces of wood so far.

Does anyone have any tips or advice?

I've got carrera brakes and am putting in Mintex pads.

Thanks!

Porsche Crest

Or, C-clamp style Vise-Grips!

Better plan on rebuilding those calipers soon, though ... binding pistons that hard usually mean rusted/corroded pistons and bore!

Thanks for the tips so far. I'll go try the C-clamp. I was hoping a rebuild was not in order. Perhaps that will be next project.

I prefer to use one of the adjusting "C" clamps because they tend to have a greater span and with the slide tightener you can get it snug and then you spin the handle to get her tighter.

Just be sure to use either a block of wood or the old pad so that the pressure is evenly applied. I wouldn't advise on putting the end of the clamp on the edge of the piston.

Good luck.

Sounds like the piston is cocked in the bore. I did that a while back when trying to 'excercise' my pistons, tracking down my pulling issue. I had to remove the caliper and squeeze it back with a c-clamp. Bad news is, it was a rear caliper - you 930-brake people know what a joy those are to R&R!

I had the same problem on my car and ended up rebuilding the rear calipers - the job was pretty easy (couldn't have done it without my dad's bright ideas and air compressor though).
