Well, no, Boxsters have power tops. So this is just a de-contented 911 with less power. Odd, because certification of the engine is costly -- unless -- and maybe this is what you were implying -- it's powered by a Boxster S/Cayman S engine.

Wow that seems like an odd decision? I remember a few years ago that the biggest selling 911 was ( I think this was toward the end of 996 production) the convertible automatic. Maybe they are trying to completely saturate that crowd. Does nto sound like its targeted at the "enthusiast".

I wish Porsche would just offer all the same motors in all their sports cars. The 911 could still be "top dog" with the AWD, GT3, and / or Turbo variant, but the Boxster / Cayman and "regular" 911s should all offer the same motors.
I'd do it like this: Entry model - "550" / Cayman / 912 Turbo H4 250 - 300hp $50k base price Regular model - Boxster / Cayman / 911 / 911 Cab / 911C4 3.4 H6 350 - 400hp $60k base price ($70k for C4 and cab models) S models - Boxster / Cayman / 911 / 911 Cab / 911C4 3.8 H6 400 - 450hp $70k base price ($80k for C4 and cab models) GT models Cayman / 911 4.0 H6 450 - 500hp $90k base price Turbo model 911 3.8 H6 turbo - 550hp and AWD $100k base price Well just a thought anyway...

Seems like a very bad idea. A stripped down Club Sport model for less $$$ would be much more interesting. If you want to spend $10k less just get last years 911 or a Boxster S.

In the 1960s an entry-level 911 was called a 912, right?
I can hear it now: "Hey, this is a Porsche." "Um, sir, it's an entry-level 911." Sounds like a potential flop.

I like the idea, if they can really make it simpler and stripped out. A la Speedster, without the ridiculous hype and price hike.
I can see enthusiasts turn to the 911 again if the price is really much much cheaper than the other variants. I'd go for one if it had zero electronic amenities. Not likely to happen though. |

A 911 ceases to be a 911 when the roof goes down. And it's fugly.

If'n you were on the west coast, I'd take a few few laps at Willow Springs to prove you wrong.

We lament how the 911 has become heavy and riddled with electronic nannies to protect us from anything remotely exciting or, heaven forbid, dangerous, and when there is a glimmer of distant hope, we bash it, based on... its aspect, based ln one distant pic?

you'd have to be stupid to pay 72k for a detuned cab. Just get a cayman, and all the benefits of the enhanced rigidity and better weight distribution, plus two trunks!
