odometer stopped working

My sons 85 Carrera's odometer stopped working, but the speedometer is still working. Is it the plastic gear or possibly some other problem. Where should we look first? Thanks Jerry

Most likely the gear has passed on.

Happens to all of us eventually. It is probably the plastic gear. You have two choices: Either do the replacement yourself. Can be done, but not that easy. Plenty of threads here. Or, you send the speedometer to a repair shop like North Hollywood Speedometer, which is a highly recommended place on this forum.

ask around locally. I had mine done at a shop close to me. I'd only send to NHS for a complete refurbishment.

Could it be the cable that attaches to the transmission, or would that disable both the speedometer and odometer. Where does this cable attach to the transmission? Thanks Jerry

The cable attching to the transmission gets the signal from there. That signal, 8 contact closures per revolution of the main shaft, feeds the speedometer gauge. Both the MPH and the miles traveled work from that signal. If the speedometer reads MPH but the odometer does not work it's the broken plastic gear inside.

If the trip odo says zero, you pushed it in while the car was moving. Ask me how I know.

Pull it out and send it to the good folks at North Hollywood Speedometer.

Have done mine and many others, also calibrated it, now the reading is spot on.
