Check out what we did about half way down the page below.

Should I install 'Carrera' side script?

I ended up removing my script.

Thanks!

That thread was very useful.

Some may see it as the same but I recognized some time ago that a car with chrome trim vs. one with black window trim have very different needs.

Jeremy's blue car in that thread I think really benefits from a stripe colour coded to the wheels, as does the light green car in post 47 of that thread. Both have black window trim, and the stripe matched to the wheels integrates well and doesn't make the car seem so top heavy. More attention is shifted down lower.

On cars with chrome trim, I think the natural body lines already make the top feel light, and accentuating that seems to work on my car with the cibie and Gulf decals.

For me personally I think this leads to very different recommendations for blacked out trim cars vs chrome trimmed cars.

As Andy said, earlier in this thread, I agree that the stripe might compete with the Gulf decal, and the eye would be confused as whether the front to back trim line runs high or low on the body. .

The decals I have attract the eye to a high line across the body while Jack's black beauty with the Porsche script has a low line. In all of these good looking example there is no competition to mess up the line. Each of them work very well in my opinion. I love how well integrated Jack's early black cars colours look)

I think I have four conclusions:

1. Because of my tail stripe, as many of you have said, if I go with a silver stripe, it will have to be the Porsche stripe in keeping with the period look of my car (regardless how historically accurate).

2.I absolutely love the tail stripe and the Cibie/Gulf decals in their current placement.

3.If I add a side stripe I would probably have to remove the Cibie and Gulf decals or the car might look like a ransom note.

4. All of the cars below are stunning to my eye. None better or worse, just different.

Instead of chrome, here is a dark windowed one without the script, but bright wheels unlike most of that era.
To my eye this later car with bright wheels doesn't need a script, although the white decal does draw the eye and I think it encourages the brain to connect the wheels together in the same way a stripe does, but in a less obvious way.

With early chrome windowed cars both seem to look good.
Jack's car with a stripe works particularly well to my eye.
But, he has also put more refining touches on the overall look of the car as well compared to mine.

I like your taste!

Bottom line, do what you want to do. It's only vinyl. Comes off easy.

I had my script on for a couple of years with the polished wheels. After a while i decided to "de-bling" things a bit. I took the script off and finished the wheels "Scotch Brite RSR"

Before,

After, No Bling

I just realized that the two pictures above of my car and Jack's are the same size. I can't photoshop but I can cut and paste!

So, it looks like Reiver's point is made.

Beltdrive's opinion has some merit as well (People know what it is without labelling it).

Not sure about Shane's point, but I may have to buy a case and sit down to consider it...

Decisions decisions.

So far the no-stripe camp is winning at 60%
In the stripe camp, the Porsche script group is leading the Carrera script group at 30% to 10%

Final decision

No stripe!

To my eye the Cibie and Gulf decals do allow the mind to fill in that big expanse of black across the door without having to actually cover the door with anything.

As many of you have said, I too love the look as is, if it were to have a stripe it would have to be the Porsche triple stripe, but it doesn't need a stripe.

To everyone. I really appreciate your input

Decided

FWIW, I agree with your daughter...as long as you remove everything else, ie, stickers and duck stripes.

Fasteddie, I appreciate that perspective. I find it interesting that Mreid posted almost the polar opposite opinion.

I now realize that when asking about a finishing touch such as a stripe, it really goes back to a bigger question:
"what type of car should I build?"

Before I began work on m basketcase, these were the two types of cars that I wanted.
I wanted both but compromised and built one somewhere in between

To be clear, the Fittipaldi, goodyear, #1, and champion decals all should come off. To your point, it is definitely a matter of personal taste and if we all had the same taste, life would be boring. The picture of the 1974 IROC car I posted is my inspiration and I will have that sahara beige beauty just as it looks (minus the distraction decals listed above) finished sometime next spring.

I assume your daughter is not old enough to drive and therefore you are her world. If you put the decal she wants on there and tell her you did it for her, you will make her world. Just sayin'.

Ask her if she likes this? It's silver, checker flag part goes to the rear, the "911" is die cut and will show as black.

Looking forward to seeing that as it progresses. If there is a build thread let me know.

As for my daughter, she's in college. While younger sh is probably more mature than me

RWebb, don't tempt me.That would go well with my dos equis and beard

Joe Bob, is that stripe like this?

Yup....been making them for awhile. The one I posted was the wrong color for the customer. So I made him another and this one is up for grabs.

Wayne, here's the thread:

My build thread

I took a little break to install a popoff valve, hydraulic tensioners, and a new exhaust and rear bumper on the 1974. I'll be back at it in about a month.

Here is the picture that prompted me to add some graphics. It shows the lines well, but doesn't anchor it in the period. Nor does it provide much hint of its past track life.

Before and after (before being after the bare metal rebuild and after being after decals applied).
