rear quarter mounted A/C condensor with fan
Anybody out there have a fan cooled A/C condensor mounted in the drivers side rear quarter that looks like this? The discharge from my compressor goes through this one first then continues on to the deck lid condensor.
Just curious? ![]()

No, don't have one. But, a VW Beetle setup that I once retrofitted to a '66 Beetle after converting to 12 Volts had twin condensers and fans mounted horizontally beside the transaxle ... and it worked just fine! Fans were a bit loud, though ... at stoplights it sounded a bit like a pre-flight run-up with twin Lycomings!

Yup, I've got this on my '72 911T. I'm told this is a "stock" setup or at least vintage. Definitely a VW system. Looks just like mine, except yours is in better shape.
I didn't think there was a fan there. Or maybe I've just identified what the loose wire hanging down from that area USED to be connected to....!? -Boyo

I think the rear mounted condensor was installed by the 2nd PO when the oversized deck lid condensor was installed. The car was located in Dallas so I think the owner went through some effort to make the AC work. I'm just getting ready to top it off with R-12. The system has gas in it but not enough to produce a cooling effect.
Yeah, you can definately hear the fan!

Wow, you don't see many of those!! I have the exact same condenser in my car, which is a '78 Euro SC. Is your A/C system underdash?
It's a smart piece of engineering they did on these systems, routing the refrigerant line to the fan cooled condenser first, so the lid mounted condenser runs cooler to ultimately keep engine temps down.

I think I saw something like that advertised by Griffiths but it doesn't look like that. Their's is much bigger from what I recall.

I do not have an underdash unit. It makes sense to reject as much heat as you can in the primary condenser. Is the A/C system on your car working? I'm planning to top mine off with R-12 tonight. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. ![]()

Could a condensor from some other kind of car be fitted in to that space? I'm sure that Griffeth's is a nice unit, but pretty expensive.

I charged the A/C system tonight with 12 oz. of precious R-12. I'm running around 33 psig suction pressure. The sight glass at the reciever still has a few bubbles but everything is working and I've got nice cool air out of the vents.
