Tarret Front sway bar question (81' SC)

I recently purchased a Tarret front swat bar bar for my 81' 911 SC, which was noted on their website to fit my car:/. I came to find out that the bar does not fit on the car unless I modify the body so that it does.

I did some reading about these modifications and on a race car I could see how it would not matter, but I have a car I would rather not do that too.

Anyone have any experience with these bars on their SC? Did this setup hold up under pressure? It seems difficult to install with the removal of the gas tank, was it as difficult as I think it is? (not mechanically inclined here )

Also, if I wanted to stick with an "under the car" bar, are there any thicker ( prefer hollow bars) Bars out there I can buy that would fit directly to my car?

Thanks for any info you can give

All of the good quality aftermarket sway bar systems will mount the same way- through the body. Doesn't matter if it's Tarett, Elephant Racing, Smart Racing, Weltmeister. The factory installed all the sway bars through the body for decades and the correct spot on the inner fenderwells are still stamped for the through body setup.

Yes it's more work, and takes some fab work to get installed. But the resulting performance is worth the trouble. And if done properly it'll be trouble free for as long as you have the car

However, if you prefer not to go with a through body sway bar, you should find the under body sways from an '85 to '89 Carrera which are larger. Your SC bars are 20mm front/18 rear, the later Carrera sways are 22/21. That's really your only option for under body.

Either way you'll end up with a better handling SC.

The 930s may have heavier bars then your SC. And they mount underbody; I should know because I just took mine off and installed a front Tarret bar. You do need to drill the fender wells for the bar to pass through. However, you do not need to remove your gas tank. I was able to use a coat hangar and fish the backing plate down to the newly drilled hole.

Honestly, I doubt your driver SC will be worth any less b/c of a through the body bar. If that somehow turns out to be true, you could always have the 1" hole filled in with a small disc of sheet metal and get it Tig welded back in. If you're not going to track the car, the Tarrett is probably more bar and more hassle than you need.

The Tarett bars are good stuff. It does take drilling some holes in the body, but it isn't that difficult. I helped a fellow Pelican install a set on his SC a couple of weeks ago. No need to remove the gas tank, you just need to be careful where you are drilling. On an SC, the bigger worry is hitting the positive wire from the battery to the starter which is hidden right where you will be drilling on the driver side.

It's better if you do remove the tank as you can position the interior backing plate a little more precisely and deburr the holes an clean all the shavings out ...
Like John says, you have to be careful about the wiring loom on the driver's side and at the same time you get to give your fuel tank a lookover and new seal if you do remove it !

I hope you will be installing rear Tarett swaybars as well, you need to balance out the whole system ...

Cheers

how did you manage to get the backing plate nuts on the through-bolts on the driver's side?

There aren't separate nuts, but just a triangle shaped backing plate with nuts welded to it. I just ran a hunk of wire through the new sway bar hole and out the top by the gas tank. I run the wire through the center of the backing plate and just slide it down into position. Put the bushing into position with the wire going through the center of it as well. Stick a finger through the sway bar hole to grab/align the backing plate and thread in the mounting bolts. It just takes a couple of minutes.

Damn, I wish I'd had thought of that!
Well, given my short-cut history, I guess I was safer removing the tank.
thanks
