Anybody want to try a projector headlight kit for 911?

I've seen threads here where people are using clever solutions to install projector headlights on their air-cooled 911s. I've been speaking to a company who offers a kit for our classic cars.

Classic 7" Projector Headlight Kit

Dapper Lighting and Pelican would like to offer one Pelicanite a discounted price ($300) on a projector kit in exchange for your writing a tech article detailing the installation process and offering your opinion on how well this kit works. Dapper will offer tech support for the installation and provide some free ballast upgrades for your effort.

Send me a PM if you are interested. First come, first served.

Looks like this is for those with sugar scoops only. If they have a kit for H-4's, count me in.

I am potentially interested.

Would like to see some depth measurements of their finished product. I could not find the info on the website.

Do they have a dimensional drawing so that I can measure clearance.

There is a way to install them in the early (flat front lens) 911 headlight buckets but the mounting clearance is limited. I just happen to have a set of these buckets waiting for installation.

Hi Scott, im just finishing a color change on my 75 s with sugar scoops. Are these designed to replace scoop lighting only. i painted rings on some h5s but wouldnt mind shooting sugar scoops same color for the common good, and try your projectors.

Hey guys,
I'm Ben with Dapper Lighting. I don't have the dimensions on me but they are roughly 1/4-1/2" longer (with a bulb installed) on the back side. I'm not familiar with the sugar scoop/non-sugar scoop terminology but I'm assuming the (non-scooped) later 911's use a H4 bulb as opposed to the (scooped) sealed housing bulb. We successfully fit them onto a 1981 911 with 55W ballasts.

I apologize for the bad pictures but this is all we have as of now. I have driven the car and can tell you the difference in light output was amazing and had a nice crisp clean cutoff.

The only problems with installation that we ran into is that a new hole needed to be drilled (or the existing widened) from inside the vehicle's headlight housing to run the additional wires under the hood. It took us about half a day to get everything working perfectly. High/low all functions properly with the headlight stalk.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'd be interested; what's the normal price? I have a '78 SC with sugar scoops.

when folks say sugar scoops they are talking about the way the sealed beam lights look. the lens goes straight down and creates a scoop like shape with the housing. the H4's euro spec fit more flush with the housing.

Do you know if the euro spec housings be swapped with a sealed beam housing? This is possible on the Hummers.

The kits are normally $369.99 and $400-410 with upgraded ballasts.

I can't answer that, but there are folks who have done their own conversions using the H4 eurospec headlights. they would be the folks who could give you better answers.

Another interesting option. Clicked on the link - any more specs on these? Lumens, photometrics, power and draw specs, bulb life expectancy, country of origin, etc..

Have an '84 3.2 driver and gave up on replacing pricey cracked lens, fogged reflector H4's.
I'm going back to the US stock 'sugar scoops' and after reading good reviews will try for now the HELLA Vision Plus 165mm H4 High/Low Beam Conversion Headlamp at $65.00 pair. Not ideal for everyone but for that money, why not?

These are extremely high quality lights for the price. The only other true projector option is a STARR lighting kit which is around $1,000. I wish I could lower the price on these guys but they are pretty expensive to produce.

The specs are going to depend on which ballast you go with. We offer a couple different options. Our most common, and included standard, is our regular 35w ballast. All of our equipment is made in Taiwan. Here are the specs on the ballast:

12v parameters:
Input voltage range: DC8~18V
Output power in stable state: 35w
Luminous flux: 2500~3500 lumen (depends on K bulbs)
Output power :reaches 70% in cold starting in 2 seconds, reaches 80% in 4 seconds, reaches rating output power in 8 seconds.
Maximum input electricity: 6.5A, reaches 3.2A in 4 seconds, 3.2A *in stable state.
Hot starting electricity: <4.0A
Instant ignition voltage: 23000v~25000v
Ballast lifespan: ~3,000 hours
Output voltage frequency: 250HZ
Open circuit protection: automatic protection initiated after 1 second
Shorti circuit protection : automatic protection initiated after 3 seconds
Waterproof, dust proof, anti-vibration
Voltage spike protection
Anti-electromagnetism protection

We also carry Matsushi ta Gen 3 ballasts which are OE on Nissan/Infiniti. As well as a standard 55W ballast (3500-4000 lumens) and 35W slim.

They all use a standard AMP input so you can use any aftermarket ballast or OE ballast with adapters.

We use an H1 because the H4 HID kit usually has a high/low built into the bulb. They are less reliable and don't put out a good spread. Our kits use a flap similar to ones in BMW, Merc, Audi, etc...

Hopefully this answered some of your questions. Like I said, we have them installed in a 911 and they work flawlessly. Honestly better than my newer BMW's HID lights.

My question is...are they DOT or in most cases CA legal. Just asking....technically euro H4s aren't but are hard to spot.

But these are kinda obviously a bit of a mod.....CHP are trained to look for this stuff and then pile on after a stop.

I checked out the dapper lighting web site and their modern kit apparently fits 911s with H4 light enclosures. The install would be similar to one of the recent threads on the subject where an HID kit was installed in the standard H4 housing. A clear VW lens would be needed in this case too.

So here is what I have been told... The manufacture builds the kits to DOT spec and then is allowed to put a DOT marking on it. Then they get them certified and tested. So they aren't DOT "approved" yet since they are so new.

We've sold a few hundred kits and haven't heard of one story about somebody receiving a ticket for having these installed. The police usually will pull over the guys who are blinding people with the HIDs in halogen housings. As long as your cutoff is at or below the license plate you won't get harassed by the police.

If you do happened to get pulled over, you just point to the markings on the housing which are DOT SAE (which they have been SAE approved) and they should let you go.

I hope that helps answer your question. It's kind of an in between'er at this moment but from what I've seen it leans more on the safe side.

Thanks Dapperlighting for the details.

Also agree with you on the light nizi's and getting ticketed. Years ago in Illinois, one would always get tagged for non-legal lights even when properly aimed. These days, many different lighting systems are available with the OE's and aftermarket, the cops gave up and don't seem to care as long as they aren't blinding. But for the states revenue concerns, its pay time if you don't sport a front license, tint the windows (which these extortion experts will still ticket you even though its legal again in IL) or have a sufficient rear license plate light.... laughable.
