| break fix drive repeat | Expected Cost to get some parts painted?
I need to get the following items painted: - rear decklid - whale tail base - stock rear valance - modified rear valance (basically a stock one with a cutout for a 2nd exhaust) Assuming no-to-minimal bodywork and repair, what should I expect a body shop to charge to paint these items in base coat / clear coat? I haven't gotten any quotes yet, just wondering what to expect ballpark. (also, if anyone has a body shop recommendation in the metro west boston area, I'm all ears!) thanks, Rich | ||

Not long ago I had a fiberglass duck tail, front and rear bumpers, and front and rear valances painted in single stage Guards Red. I stripped the bumpers and valances to bare metal, and the ducktail was in gelcoat. I had them weld up the license plate holes in the front valance for a smoother look. $1300 is what I paid. Not bad, but not a bargain either.

Asking for a paint estimate is like asking what air costs. I'll bet if you looked you could get quotes from $300 to $3000. Everything depends on the time and care taken in prep. Paint quality is important too.

I once went to a body shop and got a quote for my rear bumper blade $400.00 and front valance $300.00 and it has to be blasted/before sending it to them. So I ended up with a guy who moonlighted during weeks off for $300 for both. Not a concourse quality nor a standard piece (6/10 rating), needs wet sanding to smoothen it out. My guesstimate would be between $300 to $450 each on the decklid and base and $150 to $250 on rear valance.

Industry average paint labor rate in Boston, MA is $37/hr. Paint & Material cost is $30/hr. The 'book time' (Mitchell) for the items you listed is around 8hrs. $536. No mater how clean the parts are the shop has to prep them for paint. Figure another two hours minimum at a body rate of ($37/hr). $76. You want the parts to match expect to leave your car and pay another couple hours for the shop to spray out some drop panels. $134. That's with whatever paint the shop normally uses. You want something custom the costs go up. SWAG $750 minimum to have it done right in your AO. -J

How about metallic 2-stage Glasurit re-paint on some small parts and rear hood to match original factory paint after 30 years? Rest of the car is practically immaculate. I can do all necessary prep work. Does anybody have a suggestion?

I had a used engine lid prepared (stripped and the screw holes from a previous tail addition plugged) and color matched for about $600. I really had no idea if that was a good price, but judging from the above comments, it sounds about the going rate for a good, professional job. The lid looks like it came from the factory.
