1973.5 2.4 911T CIS...Running Issues
Here is my problem. The car starts. I can rev the engine all I want in neutral and have no issues. The other day I ran the car for about 15 min. with out any issues. The issues arise from when I put the car in gear. I can drive around for the first 10 seconds and give the car gas and actually have power but then something happens. The accelerator pedal no longer does anything. When I push down on it the engine actually sounds like it is about to stall. And when I dont push down the accelerator pedal then the car runs and moves at a pretty high idle. I do have my throttle lever and it is partially up and if I drop it down in this time the car will actually stall. And the longer the car runs the problem just gets progressively worse. I could throw out my guesses at the problem but I am no where as knowledgeable as the people who populate this forum. Please help me...I am in dire need of driving my car.

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be a too rich mixture and too low of an idle. I complained to my wrench and a few minutes on the CO analyzer and now it purrs.

I have the same car and have been through it all with that first CIS! First, buy yourself a 3mm "T" handle allen for adjusting the mixture. The mixture screw is just next to the left of the fuel distributor over the top of the airbox. A small hole that might require a flashlight to ID. Very simply when you turn the mixture screw to the left ,you lean it, to the right you enrichen it..........
I gave up on CO meters and go by sound and performance now. Its amazing how a good touch over experience sets it right. My first symptoms were like yours but the car would also die coming off the highway on the exit ramp as well. It led to the purchase of a new cold start valve, warm up regulator, fuel accumulator, and on she goes. The problem was amazing!!!! While my mechanic and I thought we were adjusting the mixture, in actuality that little mixture screw that sets the height of the sensor plate actually was going nowhere! It was not until I took the airbox cover off and held the sensor plate attachment arm up high where I could put force on the adjustment screw did I realize the screw was actually frozen in place.............so much for 29 years of moisture, corrosion and the like. I blasted that little sucker with everything I had for several days until it loosened up and was like new again. Now the car purrs and has been trouble free........I would adjust a "click" at a time until car ran perfectly throughout the RPM range. Keep this in mind as you settle in with the CIS game and may have an adjustment problem. Regards Bob 73.5T ![]() |
