Serial / transmission number question

A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a 911 transmission off of Ebay and has asked me if I can identify the following:

Up for auction is this 915 tranmisssion out of an 80's 911.
Numbers on the trans are
915/63
1274D4832

He would like to know (if possible) what year and any other information you can tell from this number.

He is also looking at another one with the serial (7102633). He is sure this is from a 1971 but doesn't know what the other numbers mean.

Any help is appreciated.

the 915/63 signifies that it is for a 3.0. which has an aluminum case and I believe has higher gears. 915/61 is the magnesium case.

There is an error in the serial number ... but he won't mind!

There are actually three number sequences there! It should read: '915/63' '12' '74D4832'

It is a 1983 model 915, and the '12' indicated it has a factory-equipped ZF limited-slip differential!

Porsche Crest '70 Box

And, the other box, 7102633, breaks down as follows:

7 = 6-Cylinder Car
1 = Transmission type 1, 5-speed, standard ratios
0 = Model year 1970
2633 = Sequential Number

If the ratios have not been changed, they should be:

11:34 A
18:32 GA
23:28 O
27:25 V
29:22 ZA
and the Ring and pinion should be a 7:31

There should also be a 911/01 stamped on the bottom case rib, ahead of the 7- number.

Does it have a limited slip?

Other useful information can be found here: http://www.911t.org/TechSpecs/number_codes.htm

Question

Early_S_Man or anyone else that may know. Is there a link to a site that provides the break down for the serial number that is on the transaxle for the 1980's 911's. A link similiar to the one that John_Cramer posted for 1970's 911's.

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, and he has already added info stating that it has the ZF ...

OK, so, who spilled the beans?

Now that the price is going to rise significantly ... anyone seriously interested better email him and get verification that the output flanges can't be turned independently ... wiothout a great deal of torque being applied!
