Whats wrong with your 911?

I am tackling several small to medium sized projects and have been making a checklist of things to rectify. I thought it would be fun to compare notes. Most of our cars are pretty old and I think only a few lucky users have their cars at %100.

1. AC Doesnt work
2. Evap fans and heater blowers dont work
3. Sunroof doesnt shut perfectly
4. door map pockets a little warped
5. door rattles a bit with window down
6. Passenger side seat doesnt fold forward
7. paint oxidized on roof and one of the fenders
8. It is stock

Thats all I can think of for now. I am trying to knock out 1-6 so I can spend real money on 7 and 8 soon enough!

the good news is that you don't have anything on the list like "funny noise from engine", clouds of blue smoke, etc. Most the items on your list are fixable by a reasonably skilled home mechanic.

I have recently driven a 100% car - more like a 125% - every nut and bolt, hose, grommet, etc and it was extraordinary. I'll let the owner chime in here. It took about a year of work to get it that way and it is very, very nice.

I also have a 1984. Here is my list:

1. Small rust spot , forward right quarter panel. Cheap fix according to my body-man
2. The ubiquitous broken odometer
3. Front calipers need rebuild
4. Front wheel bearings need replacement.
5. May as well re-bush the front end while I am at it.
6. Install new Targa rubber that has been sitting in trunk for four years.
7. Install the Targa Top Pin covers that I ordered two years ago.
8. Install new Turn Signal swith that I have sitting on the shelf.
9. Recover my Steering wheel with Alan Gunn kit(Have had it for seven years).
10. Order and install new Oil Pressure sending unit.

Thanks, aschen. Now I feel like a complete loser. LOL. And lazy as well. :)

I've spent $9800 in the last 3 years on my '78 Targa and these are THE FINAL things:

-Install Carrera Oil Cooler purchased off PP
-Paintless dent removal for a ding on lower RR quarter
-Pay close attention to a strange situation with the #2 cyl exhaust side (pinpointed but must watch)
-Diagnose/Remedy a strange high idle condition I get only when decelerating with the engine. So far I'm thinking AAV.
-Dyno the car to get everything working together after these final fixes have been made.

My 1980 SC is a daily driver and it's past 260,000 miles on original engine. LOTS of deferred maintenance, but it runs. I put 70 miles a day on it and it is very reliable and quite worn.
1. Low compression in Cyl #2
2. WUR not functioning correctly - need to buy a fuel pressure tester
3. Vacuum leaks - need to track down the source
4. Oil Leaks - not totally solvable until case is split
5. Headlights dim and mis-aimed - need to check grounds
6. Possible fuel injectors dirty or worn
7. Time to replace the fuel filter
8. Passenger window switch 1/2 working. Goes up, not down. Replace
9. Front suspension bushings squeaking - likely worn and need replacement
10. Front bearings need to be inspected for wear. No indication, but its time
11. Rear tires worn to wear bars
12. Heater disconnected due to oil leaks/smoke when not moving
13. Sunroof needs trolley/track replacement due to separated cable
14. Time for a paint job
15. ODO not functional

I intend to continue to wear it out and replace what's broken or address problems when they get critical. One day I'll stop driving it for a year and tear into it. It's given me 8 really fun years so far and I've added 150,000 miles to it. It deserves a freshening through and through.

But I'm not done driving it hard and enjoying it for now. Amazing how reliable they can be even with deferred maintenance.

I've been keeping a spreadsheet - here is what I have at the moment:

Make cup holder for passenger seat rail
Fix flapper box issue preventing heat from reaching the front.
Recover side window seals
Clean front valence, straighten and address paint issue.
Secure Battery. Get plastic cutting board base... (see project thread).
Tighten/fix hand brake
Clean and organize underdash wires.
Cracking window edge seals
Screw for seat slider
Goofoff to clean stickers and fuse box
Clean/Paint Wheels w/ 7271 silver metallic Rustoleum (Ace on Lisbon & Home Depot)

I've had my 80SC for about a year now. 115,000 miles as of last week. Runs good but has plenty of issues.

Missing right fender blinker
cracked front bumber
shot whale tale trim
seized air pump that needs removed.
warped door pockets that need straightened
unthreaded steering wheel
inoperable sunroof
broken heating system
No air condition system
bad sun visors and bracketry
previous paint is starting to show on base of car (old was black and new paint is red)
The latest problem, dual decklid struts have caused alignment problems on deckled

I've got a lot of work to do.

Made a list today for my 89 Targa:

Need new fresh air blower
Need new pass side footwell blower
Need new electric mirror switch
Need new wiper motor
Track down very annoying beep and alarm light and disconnect
Replace High beam light bulb
Track down and repair footwell blowers on all the time
Charge A/C and test
Isolate Targa top wind noise(seal?) and fix
Figure out what's wrong with Cruise Control

For whatever reason, driver's side rear wheel sticks out about 1" more than passenger side. I've seen other cars like it. It's the only issue I have and nobody has a real answer. Driving me bonkers. Will probably install a spacer.

mdripley 09-03-2013 03:31 PM

87 930

1) Fix Ignition system.
2) correct all electrical gremlins(replace fuse boxes)
3) struts & Shocks r&r
4) fix dent on tail, right rear wheel flare, and dent on drivers side near gas cap flap.
5) replace all vacuum lines & hoses.
6)parking brake cable, shoes

I am sure there is more for me to do, this is a start.

JQ911 09-03-2013 03:38 PM

On my list:

- 2nd gear is not as smooth as the rest. (hope its just a coupler adjustment)
- Shifter vibrates on heavy acceleration, particularly on 3rd - (hope its just the tranny mounts)
- Odd noise under load its like whining or a faint vibrating sound on the tranny or engine, gets louder when under load and gone once you downshift. (hope its just my imagination or i am in big trouble)
- Intermittent howl on the fan (could be am alt. bearing) usually after a long run. I drove 180 miles yesterday going back from CT and surprisingly, didn't hear the howl but the first 3 on my list are all there.

zimmer266 09-03-2013 04:07 PM

Three years into my stewardship and feeling pretty good after looking at everyone's lists.

Stuff:

1) The left turn blinker is sometimes slow and sometimes fast, which is suspicious for one of the bulbs or connections being intermittent.
2) Parking brake needs an adjustment.
3) I had the AC mostly removed, but I live well northeast. No problem.
4) The driver's seat bolster is pretty worn.
5) The paint on the front and rear bumpers, as well as the stone chips to the hood, are tired enough to add some patina.

In fact, since there's not that much to do I'd been thinking about taking on a 914. Not selling the 3.2, but picking up a 914, or maybe a 944, just to have some thing for a project.

Nick Triesch 09-03-2013 04:11 PM

915 worn but I can drive it, dome lights do not work when you open the door, need headliner, central locking does not always work. rock chips. That's about it! Nick

Mine is a 1988. I've owned it for just shy of 10 years. What's wrong?
  • Recently rebuilt alternator is bad.
  • Ex wife scratched the paint up.
  • A/C does not work. (Then again, I don't really care.)

Now for what's good.
  • Except for what I've mentioned above everything is 100% solid.
  • It's back in my possession.
  • The ex didn't burn it.
  • The alternator issue is being addressed.

Hmmm whats wrong with my 911???? It doesnt have a 3.5 or 3.6 sitting in it yet lol In the meantime, I'll keep driving it with the 3.2 as though I stole it :)

I have a ROW '85 Carrera. Need a new headliner, A/C condenser [rear],I am sure more A/C parts are going to be needed if I choose to fix it. Driver's seat bolster repair, rock chips on hood,[ that is being painted on the 16th of Sept] Sunroof air deflector springs need installed.

Racekar 09-03-2013 05:58 PM

Needs
1. AC leaks out freon after two weeks, need to find leak
2. Front and rear lower bumper valance are really bent up and need replacement
3. Sport seat bolster on the drivers side needs the piping fixed
4. Drivers window has the broken helper spring problem, winter project
5. Have to adjust shifter again after I replaced bushings, still not good
6. Runs poorly until warm, need to figure out why and fix it.
Wants
Refinish wheels
Professional touchup of all paint problems
Find a good replacement radio that does not look like a video game
Carrera rear spoiler
Either euro rear bumper rubber or remove it all and fill and paint
A better sounding muffler that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
