Lowered front end
The PO lowered the front end by 2 inches. He said it drives a lot better...I wouldn't know, didn't drive it before it was lowered. The problem is that the bar in the front of the car right below and a bit back from the front bumper scrapes the concrete when I pull into my driveway. Okay, here is the idiot question: What is that bar that scrapes? Is it for hitting things like highly sloped driveways and curbs? How do I get around scraping this bar every time I drive into my driveway?

Don't know your 87 very well but is it the tow hook in the center and one to the side?
I think if the suspension is worn and needing attention the back will "sag" a bit causing the front to raise and handle poorly. Lowering the front compensates for this without having to replace any parts. Before I bought my car I drove it 2 days apart and the seller had lowered the front before the second drive and it drove much better. It wasn't something I mentioned to him but he had done it anyway. I know I will have to do suspension work soon but for the interim it handles better. Others with more correct knowledge of this chime in and tell me if I'm right. Just guessing here.

If indeed you are talking about the tow hook, did you know you can buy a replacement which is designed to take up some the damage caused by scrapping. Pelican has this part if you do a search. Its a modified tow hook that has a lot of strength in it. Then again I wouldn't go around TRYING to test it out.
My 87 is lowered too. I usually approach high obstacles with the car on an angle to get one wheel up first. In other words don't approach a drive head on. Come at an angle. When I bought my car I found that my protection bar for the a/c cond. has been scrapped before too. This is the bar running across the front of the car under the valance. This couldbe the other thing scrapping Cheers Mark |

The description of the scraping bar sounds like it is the protecting bar for the front mounted A/C condenser. You might want to consider raising the front end back closer to stock.
