Project Elephant: What's in the box?

Since I bought my '73 a couple months ago I have been sorting out various little details; rebuild and rejet carbs, tuning, oil leaks, pedal cluster, clutch cable..... routine stuff.

And quitely accumulating parts for Project Elephant. This modest 911T will be converted into the Elephant Racing track machine.

Phase 1 will cover the full track prep of the suspension, brakes, cooling system, and safety gear. Also RS bodywork and extensive lightening with a target 2100 lbs. The existing S spec 2.4 and trans will be used in essentially it's existing configuration. The car is being built for POC HP.

Phase 2 will be a 2.7 conversion. Probably twin plug. Short stack of gears and trans cooler. Further lightening to get into POC V5 or V4.

This landed on my doorstep yesterday:

What could it be?

Did you guess Fiberglass? You are correct sir.

That's all the RS bits plus a hood. That is all the glass allowed in POC production.

The bodywork officially kicks of the start of Project Elephant.
I plan to be giving occasional updates as this unfolds.

Chuck,

Looks nice. Whose stuff did you buy and did you get a glass hood as well? Care to give us an idea on the cost?

Am wanting to take my 911 back to a long hood RS repro and looking at using glass as metal parts are just not available everywhere.

Thx,

JA

Chuck,

Will you be replacing your engine grille? I've been looking for a decent 2.4 badged grille to replace the incorrect black plastic one on my 73.

Chuck,

First I must say, good thinking on the Elephant Lines and then the track conversion. Good business write off.

Second, your timing could not be better. I am picking up my FG hood from MA Shaw in about an hour and am wondering where to get the IROC style front FG bumper and rear bumper. Mike doesn't make the IROC style front. Could you tell me what you think of the FG you received and who is the maker?

I was also wondering about the POC limits on FG, but you clarified that.

Thanks.

pbs, that's not an IROC. It's a regular 'ole RS front bumper. I'll learn more about the quality of the parts as I try to fit them but initial look is good.

POC rules are different for each catagory - stock, improved, production, V, Z. You need to get their general competition rules (GCR) to see what is allowed in each. The way to build a car is to decide what class and club you will run in, then use the GCR from that club as your spec sheet.

Elephant is more than just a write off. I'm getting ready to introduce a whole new group of track products in the next month.

Bill, the paint is not original. It is close to Gulf blue. I do like it but I am leaning towards a White / Red RS scheme. Since the Elephant colors are white/red/black it makes a good base.

Ron, thanks for the tip. I'm a few weeks out from the paint job. I'll be spraying it myself. I've done a few before but I will be looking for tips.

Hockey, I plan to keep the grill. The patina of the old aluminum is great.

Paul, I've got the oil system covered thanks.

Chuck,

I can't wait for the next update! It's going to be one cool car.

How on earth did they fit all of that into that tiny little box??

btw, have you pulled the motor already? The rear guards have a lot of clearance!
