AC Adapter Poss In Lighter Socket 70s/80s 911

RE PLUGGING IN A GPS AC Adapater .. My wrench is saying that the Porsches of the 70s/80s generally had a European Lighter Socket which is Usually not compatible with curret day AC adapters -- ever come across that issue ? ... My wrench is talking of wiring in a separate courtesy/lighter adapter into my 88 Coupe for my GPS, just to be sure I'm covered .. ie I really need a GPS for a coming roadtrip ... I am not currently stateside to check this out in person ....

The lighter sockets are compatible with current day A/C adapters, but the problem is that the European sockets have a slightly larger inner diameter, so the US plug is generally not tight enough to stay put. There are several "fixes" to this posted on the forum throughout the years, but what I chose to do was slip a rubber washer over my adapter plug, which then makes for a perfectly tight fit (rubber washer has a outer diameter slightly larger than the socket inner diameter). This has worked well for me for quite some time.

Had the same problem for years...tried multiple sockets with varying levels of success but just got tired of the dash having the plug sticking out of it.

Finally went with a high quality adapter with a lot of nice options and hard wired it to the electrical system through the circuit that powers the courtesy lights on the door so that when I turn the car off, the unit is still powered until I open the door.

I mounted the unit to the bottom of the cruise control unit with Velcro and then used a pair of zip ties to secure it. I then mounted my Valentine One hard wire receptacle under the adapter as well.

I have a Pioneer 9500 unit that has a rear cord for my iPhone which charges the phone.

On my power adapter, I run my GPS and my voltmeter. It has two additional USB slots, one that is a 2 Amp for fast recharge and a lesser one. I have an Apple cord plugged in and coiled for my wife or daughters to charge their phones.

The voltmeter is a great unit I've been running for a long time.

I simply added a strip of rubber electrical tape (it's thicker) down the length of two sides of the plug. 180* from each other 90* from the contacts. Tape has been doing it's thing for over a year now. No issues. Plug stays put. -J

I've been lucky too. I've had (3) 3.2 911s and my radar detector plug has worked securely in all of them.

Looks good, just need to fan a face plate to cover it and look stock. Do that after your trip
