Need Help -Targa alignment pin cover...
I used my PCNA $100 off coupon this week on several items at my local Porsche dealership. Part of this purchase was for the 2 plastic covers on the targa top alignment pins that slide into the roll bar. Removal of the orginals was easy. Both were already cracked and chipped, so I slit them fully open with a utility knife and they came right off.
I thought the new covers would just slide onto the pins. The problem is with installing the new covers. The inside of the covers have "ribs" that appear to "engage" on the pins. I can press each of the covers on over the first few ribs, but no further. I'm hoping someone else on the board has performed this task and knows a trick that will work.

Mark,
Two things ... a bit of silicone grease on the pins close to the frame, and warm the covers in boiling water for a couple of minutes. Wear heavy leather gloves ... and work quickly! BTW ... what's wrong about this pic from the 1975 brochure?

Thanks Warren. I'll give it a try.
BTW: The pic is missing the parts I'm trying to install.

Marc,
That's because it is a pre-74 top ... no center alignment pin, and no plastic covers to suppress noise/rattles, either!

Warren,
You da man! One cup of water, super-hot from the microwave. Soak alignment pin covers for about 5 minutes. One small squirt of lube on the pins, and the covers slid on with no effort.

Another way that works is to use a hair dryer or heat gun, particularly if you have them partly on and can't get them off (ask me how I know!).
Just heat them and push right on. (I got this tip courtesy of Dan at Cars Inc.)

Had to take one that was stuck half way through with a box cutter, 15$ down the drain... Now I know. To be continued tomorrow.

And if the hot cover does not slip on completely use a heat gun to heat up both the pin and the cover. Work it down with a utility glove. Ask me how I know.
