Dead Engine Mounts!

In an attempt to correct a bad noise under acceleration, I am in the process of replacing my engine mounts. After several days soaking in WD40 while I awaited the arrival of the mounts, I finally was able to start.
Amusingly, my heater backdate actually made it harder to do something - it blocks easy access to the nuts on the passenger side. But I did successfully remove the old mount.

This thing is a horrible mess! Does this look like the likely culprit to a bad noise?

Well, it definitely wouldn't help quiet things down!
Are you doing the transmission mounts as well?

Yes, I got a set of 4 mounts. I'm not sure where exactly to place the jack to hold the transmission when I replace those 2. My understanding is to use my Aircraft Spruce 950 page catalog on the jack - presumably right in the middle of the transmission house, right?

As long as the rear mounts are installed, you aren't supporting much weight. Use something between the jack and the transmission to take the weight off of the mounts. There are 4 studs/nuts that attach the crossmember to the transmission. Easiest to take it out to change the mounts on the bench. When you go back in, get the two big mounting bolts started and aligned with their threads before tightening the four nuts. It allows a bit of wiggle room to make sure you don't cross thread the mounting bolts.

Great advice, I always loosen mine when re-installing my engine/tranny for that very reason!

Yes a mount like that is going to make some clunking noise for sure. Glad to see you got it out and it didn't damage the car in the process. Take a closer look at the thru-bolt and the area around the mount to double-check there's no collateral damage.

Try a different "lubricant" next time you have stuck bolts to work on. WD40 is a poor choice for getting stuck fasteners to loosen. WD stands for "Water Dispersant" and it's better at preventing rust than it is penetrating it. WD40 is one of the most misused products on cars. I like the stuff myself. Just don't like to see people using it where it doesn't really work too well.

Hi, Based on what has been discussed here, looks like I need to replace my motor and tranny mounts to correct slight vibration on engine under load while my shifter moves and vibrates under hard acceleration.

Am I correct assuming both have the same part no. for my 86 and just order 4 of these? Sorry for the stupid question.

Will search further step by step procedure on how to replace them DIY as 101 Projects lack illustration on page 83.

I went with the significantly cheaper Sport mounts (911-375-043-07-M127). $27 each. I also replaced the mount plates on each one (901-305-311-00-M260). Mine is a daily-driver on the sometimes-rough roads of Milwaukee, so I didn't want semi-solid mounts with less cushioning.

Your link does appear to be correct for your car year and model. If you aren't certain they are what you need, PP has techs who can answer questions one-to-one.

mounts

Hi Oso,

Thanks! Will check the sports mounts you bought and find out if it would fit mine (believe it would) and might get the same as well.
