Central Locking - Locks but no unlocking
Hey all,
My bug chasing continues, and I'm finally getting around to addressing my locking issue. Problem is as follows: central locking button... 1) ...will lock both doors (if both unlocked, otherwise will not lock). 2) ...will *not* unlock both doors (regardless of door lock state). 3) ...is dim if running lights/headlights are on, and brightens if doors were locked at some point with central locking button. 4) ...is dark (not dim) until running light/headlights are on, and dark otherwise. I'm thinking the central locking module is on it's way out, as by the above symptoms, everything is getting power and the mechanical bits are functioning properly. I'm not a big fan of throwing parts at problems, so I'd like a possible diagnosis or ideas first. Thoughts? Thanks, Matthew |

Isolate the problem to make sure the actuators are working. Do both doors lock and unlock with the key in their respective locks? Does the opposite door lock and unlock at the same time? If so, actuators and respective linkages are okay. I had probs with the linkage which features a cheesy plastic ball and cup joint that apparently fails often and could cause irregular locking.

Actuators work just fine; external key operation and internal knob operation both work the locks as intended.

Had a similar problem to this after losing the screw on the back of my lock. Has to take the handle off and the door card to get at the bit and pieces that had fallen into the bottom of the door. After fixing (or at least what I thought) everything the cenrtal locking started to act up muck like you described. It turned out to be a problem with the micro switch attached to the lock. Check to see its not come loose or broken off.

Take out the module and remove the cover, at the base of the module there is a pin that has a soldered connection that is known to fail, (I had a pic of it but lost it, )the soldered area is rather large and if its broken you wont miss seeing it..IIRC it wraps around the pin base like a cuff and then is soldered..

I personally never understood what circumstances would lead you to press the central locking button and would just as soon leave it alone - is the fear that if it goes totally south the actuators will cease receiving signals?
