Fuel pump issue

anyone ever experience a fuel pump working, then not.

I just installed a brand new one, it worked fine for a few days, then stopped. I installed another one, same deal.

It is on a 79 CIS, with no lambda and no DME.

any suggestions especailly from experience are greatly appreciated!

Jim

this picture is with the relay still in the plug pulled out enough to view the ground peg cut off this small stub when pushed into the plug and contact is made will shut the fuel pump when the bad ground activates the alarm can't find the reason for the alarm being activated so the ability to shut down the car is stopped by removing this ground I can send more pics if this is not clear enough

I'm on my third pump when it arrives. I put in a new dansk tank. I am thinking it was the absence of the strainer but maybe the pumps are just bad. I bought the car which was sitting for eight years and had to replace the tank. It's frustrating that the newest parts a re the failure. I just bought a 100 micron filter to put in line to hopefully solve issue. I'd hate to think all the pumps are junk! I just refinished my wheels and I just want to drive this thing!

Pictures of new FP..........

Guys,

Could you post some pictures of these problematic FP's? Were these Bosch brand made where? I've been running my CIS bench tester using an old Bosch FP for many years now and heavily depended on a good reliable FP. So if we could identify this particular batch of FP, people would be saving time and money from not using them.

This case is very similar to the Brazilian made ignition coil. It looks great but does not perform like the old black ignition coil made in Germany. Thanks.

Tony

I dont think my issue is the alarm system, as I dont have one. but perhaps I do need to run thru the wiring of the fuel system to check for any bad grounds as you suggest! thanks!

I will post some pics of the brand new fuel pumps that have failed as soon as I can.

ngrich99 its odd , cuz I just installed a new tank as well, perhaps there is trash in the new tank that is washing out with the gas and screwing with the pump?

The FP in my 83 cabriolet finally gave up the ghost in Nov last year. Symptoms first presented as random "no start" issues, especially when warm after a drive. Continued to get worse and an obvious rattling noise. I replaced it with a Bosch 69466 purchased from Amazon. I'm sorry I didn't take a photo of the box and manufacturer info. I am going to do that as part of my records from now on. But, this pump has been going strong and I recently tested fuel pressures as part of some COS debugging.

I kept my old pump to have it rebuilt at some point. It looked like it was original. I cleaned the terminals and treated them with Gibbs to minimize corrosion. The terminals were really corroded, could be the source of your problems if you didn't thoroughly clean them.

I have a question though, are the rubber boots or an acceptable replacement available anywhere? I searched and didn't find anything.

Talking try the relay

"fuel system to check for any bad grounds as you suggest"

this is how I started on the issue the pump would shut off while driving down the road fuel tank out and cleaned new pump waiting to install with the tank out I could easily access the pump checking the pump leads to find out if it was the power or the ground went through the fuse panel and cleaned up all the connections new connectors new fuses new wire on the tester key on it had power reinstall 2 miles down the road shut off called the pro had it towed fixed in 1 hour my car does not have a alarm either but whatever alarm that remained and wasn't removed caused the fuel pump power to ground out and shut it off easy test get a spare relay cut the ground try it or part it out it may not run again send some pics I am looking fix it man fix it

well today I removed the new fuel pump, and it like the previos new fuel pump is dead. so I am going with faulty fuel pumps as my most likely issue. forgot to take a pic, but will. Im starting to think this car is cursed. LOL

Where are you getting the pumps?
FLAPS?
Maybe send the original out to be rebuilt if you still have it.

First Bosch replacement locked up. Once out of car I reversed polarity and it started working. There was some metal slivers in the fuel that came out. I ran it on the bench and it seemed a bit loud and I didn't trust it so I sent it back. I flushed the new dansk tank again with 15 gallons of fuel. The second pump was quite on first install and I went for a short drive. I had approx. 7 gallons in the tank. I did a 180 to go back up the test track, I got about 100yds and dead never to restart. This pump when removed is locked solid and even on reverse polarity just clicks.
So I will plumb this 100 micron filter in and try again.

NGrinch where did you get the filter? Also if you can, post a pic with it installed, as there is not much room up there, id like to see how you did it.

THanks!
Jim

Just keep the receipt handy, re-check before the 2 year anniversary. Swap if it starts making a loud buzzing sound. Mine started just after the 2 year period. Sending out for a rebuild. Suspect is the armature.

Jim,

Where do you send them for rebuild? More or less how much $$$ per pump? I got a small box of dead Bosch FP's in my storage that I have been saving. Did not realize these are rebuildable (?). Thanks.

Tony
