Valve adjustment.......should I be concerned???

For the first time, I am shooting to do my own 86 Carreras valve adjustment. It took my various hours just to take the rusty bolts off of the CAT. Well, finally did it the next day. I took all of the misc parts so I could then take the valve covers off. One look inside, and what do I see............the rocker arm sliding out of the housing!! WT#%$#%$! What do I do in these case....sell the car (JK)? Do I just tap it in and then tighten the Allen bolt that is holding it there? I have no idea and decided to call it a day and refer to my Amigos at Pelican, Gracias!!

Push it back and torque it a little higher than specs.

Loosen a little, push it back and torque it to 20 ft/lbs not 11 or 12 like the book says....

When you say loosen, I assume loosening the allen and then tightening?

Well are you not lucky to find this before it moved all the way out. I would remove it and inspect in case the rocker has been grabbing on the shaft and causing it to walk out of the housing. If it all looks fine, reinstall and retighten and move on.

Yes. 5mm on one end. IIRC 8mm on the other. -J

2 Allens to loosen, one on each end, and as porboynz noted, take a good look at the bore for any damage. Inspect the shaft and rocker bushing for damage and clearance as well.

Finally, back in the game!

Question, does the shaft not spin with the rocker? Or does it stay put, and just the rocker rocks?

Timmy, so does the pressure of the Allens on both sides keep it put? and do you think that the shaft was not tight enough?

The cone washers on both ends expand the shaft on the ends to keep it in place. Friction fit.

I saw this in an SC I worked on a couple of years ago, only in that case half of the rockershafts were loose. Check all of the rocker shafts for proper torque. It's not the end of the world.
