Jonathon's '82 911 SC Thread

Ok guys, I havn't had an official introduction yet so I figured I would write one up.

It all started when I was in University doing my undergrad. A friend of my dads asked me to come along to Mosport one weekend and I ended up getting my first pro-racing mechanics job with TRG.

I worked off and on with them for a couple of years through 2007-2008 doing Grand-Am Koni Challenge stuff.

After that I got hooked up with GMG doing SCCA World Challenge GT and have been doing that ever since with a couple of short stints into ALMS and Patron GT3 Challenge.

At the same time I kept really busy with school racing activities in Formula SAE. I ran the powertrain department during my time there.

Here is a shot of our F2008. I'm on the right. This was after coming 2nd place to UofT at a technical design presentation made by myself and my friend Steve. (We were a startup team, so to come 2nd to a team like UofT was a great finish for us.)

Here is a shot with my Dad at Mosport during an FSAE Shootout.

Some action shots of me throwing down some flyers at Mosport.

And finally, I poured my heart and sole into this one. The aerodynamics was my thesis project and was dynamically adjustable in real time, independantly in all four corners.

Then I graduate, and fastforward a little bit and I have my first house, am engaged to be married this august, am doing my masters part-time, started up my own regional Formula 1200 race team AVR Motorsports, and bought my first 911!

A 1982 Porsche 911 SC

First time home in our driveway and in front of the garage.

I haven't really done much since I got it. I adjusted the valves without replacing the valve cover gaskets. It's a little bit leaky, and drips right on the exhaust - I had it on the DDT at Mosport and came off and the left heat exchanger was on fire. I put it out with a bottle of water but the engine is out to get cleaned up and resealed so that this doesn't happen again. I will also be doing caliper rebuilds and stainless line upgrade along with new pads and rotors.

Here is a picture with my dad pulling the motor for the first time! Thanks to his coworker Paul and my friend Matt for their hard work in helping to get it out that day... 8 hours, that with me already disconnecting most of everything needing disconnected...

I have more photos to come as I have already seperated the trans, put the engine on the stand, started cleaning and disassembling! Stay tuned and I can't wait for the onslaught of opinions and comments!

Cheers pelicans.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the comments. The whole point of this is to share my learnings with everyone as I progress through 911 ownership. It has been a long-time coming, even if I am still very young, I feel like I waited forever to get one.

Always looking for some local peops to come hang out! Being in Canada it is hard to come by... drop me a line if anyone can give me a hand with my outrageous projects.

Cheers

So far I have had a couple of snags... The heat exchangers were an EXTREME pain to remove, I am debating buying new ones now and possibly opting for a set of headers - I saw someone do a heater-hack that involved Al pipe hose clamped to the headers, seems interesting.

When I disconnected the dizzy connector it was crumbled inside, pictures to follow.

Also, my behr oil cooler is somewhat crushed from some prying that took place when pulling the transmission. I think only the fins are crushed, one of the tubes may be slightly collapsed. I am really nervous about this part, I will need to get it pressure checked somewhere.

My trans fill plug is a female hex screw, 17mm seems just too small, and I can't find an 18mm anywhere. Ideas?

I am stuck on removing the steel mounting bracket that covers the crank pully, I need to get it off to try and replace the pully seal without splitting the case. Pictures to come with the fastener I can't reach. Will need ideas here too...

I discovered I am leaking from the cam-boxes as well, so chain covers will come off and I will need help determining my style of cam gears so I can buy the right tools. More pics to come along with all my questions in the near future! Stay tuned!

Update - High-Res version!

Ok guys, High Res Pics!...

But here is the engine out on the jack stand with the transmission seperated.

On the stand CIS removed.

Exhaust, fan and shroud removed.

Some cleaning and removing engine mount bar.

Other side.

Some more cleaning.

What the plugs look like...

What the shop currently looks like, slightly cleaned trans in the foreground.

And another view!

As soon as I get some time back at home I will update these with high-res pics!

Cheers.

Pics to go with my problems...

Alright so I promised some pics for the issues I am having... But I will start with a couple of new goodies I got!

A new vice... 5in, 80 bucks at Princess Auto.

A 30 dollar bench grinder (6in) @ PA as well.

Now my troubles... The dizzy connector, has anyone had this happen before? Ideas?

I got a PM from a fellow Ontarian, Arthur, who said the drain plug was definitely 17mm - So I test fit it again... seemed ok...

And out it came! The trans seems totally over-filled. I pulled the plug and it practically poured out from the top of the openning.

Now the oil cooler... Here is the outside that was pried against.

And the collapsed fins / semi-collapsed tube at one end...

Thoughts?

Only had time to snap pics tonight...

Cheers.

The Dizzy green wire needs to be replaced. Available from Pelican. Send out the cooler to a really good shop to straighten and pressure test. Looks like you have a backdated oil line to the block, so SSI's will bolt right in for your exhaust.
Sending you a PM.

'green wire'? Is it the one with the connector on the end like in my picture? I think mine has two leads on it, could be wrong.

Regards,

Jonathon

My "green" wire was brown after 32 years. Cracked in a couple of places. It's a coax wire to the CDI box. Should be about 5" long if it hasn't been altered. may look like 2 wires if the casing has split. Basically a shielded signal wire.

My next question is should I go with SSIs or headers? I have a 2in2out BnB muffler, would that bolt up to a set of headers from our host?

And another question... has anyone ever replaced their crank pulley seal without splitting the case? I may need to do this...

Looks like you may already have thin flange SSI's on it.
Take a picture of them.
Crank pulley seal is easily done with the pulley removed.

Congrats on the project. You need to to what I did and drive away from your wedding in August in the SC. That will ensure that you get to keep it forever because it will have sentimental value. (Ironically my wedding was also in August).

Good luck.
