3.6 conversion
Unless someone "wants to get rid" of his 3.6 engine just taking up space in the garage I will venture out to the homelands this weekend to look at some. Seriously, I am about to go on a business trip to Good Old and plan to meet a guy who sells these 3.6 engines en masse.
Now I have to make my mind up as to whether it is going to be an early 964, a mid 964 (plastic intake, still no head gasket), a late 964 or even a 993 (maybe even Euro-VarioRam/non-OBDII)???? I would like to get opinions where $$$ are spent wise and where not. Please educate me.... ![]() So far hearsay has it, that: - From a performance point the 964 won't be far behind after putting a good exhaust on it - The added performance on the 993 non-VarioRam is mainly due to exhaust changes - the mid-style headgasket-less 964 engines are ".. not so prone..." to head leaks as the earlier ones - 993-style non-adjustable valves are a plus from a maintenance viewpoint - For high performance applications the 964 might be even be a better choice - The lower the mileage the better (that’s an easy one…) |

When you go see this guy get a price list and post it here.
![]() I am looking at a possible 3.6 swap in the future and would consider a euro motor if the price was right.

Ditto. I am starting to toy with the idea of doing a 3.6 conversion. My 3.2 has 84k miles on it and I believe it's very healthy. But I'm about to refinance my house and may just take some cash out for home and Porsche improvements. How much could I get for my '87 3.2? I'd like to minimize my net out of pocket.

ischmitz, you've summed it up nicely. I would stick with late 964 if I were going to further hotrod the engine, or a 993 version if no further engine work was envisioned.
The 993 hydraulic lifters are a huge plus for a street driven engine. I also think that the internally balanced crank and lighter rotating components are an asset. Another plus is the MAF setup on the 993. On the other hand the heat and electrical hookups are somewhat more difficult. The euro non obdII version of the 993 sounds very intrigueing! Here are 2 relatively recent threads; 3.6 swap1 Best 3.6 to transplant

Richard and Thrown_hammer,
I will try to get as much information and pricing as I can. I might even snap some digitals and post them later. The guy claims he has more than 10 engines in his shop. Maybe we should arrange for a group purchase and get a volume discount, hm ![]() ![]() ![]() Ingo |

I too hope to go 3.6 in my 82sc to c2 tubo conversion look, The main reason is to get ride of all the parts that go with cis as in the rubber boots and crap like that, and all the electric parts as in all the fuel injection junk that goes with earlier cars, from what everyone has said that has done it they are extremely happy, good luck, Kevin
