Question about Cams.
Hi, I have a 76 911S which should have S cams right? she is stock and original.
found an engine with Solex grind Cams, will this work with my stock CIS injection? and what is the difference with solex vs S cam thanks |

No, Solex cams will not work with your CIS. All 2.7 CIS cars have the same cams, known appropriately enough as "CIS cams". These are very mild which the CIS requires since it sprays fuel continuously (hence its name) into the intakes, even when the valves are closed. So though you have a 911 "S" you actually don't have what are considered "S" cams, which were used on the '67-'73 911S (and 2.7 RS).

by '76 the CIS 2.7s all used the same cams in the US the cars had the S label but they used the same smog cams as the ROW normal 2.7, I suppose it should be called a smog S, specs for smog S are IO 6ATDC, IC 50ABDC, EO 24BBDC, EC 2BTDC specs for smog N are IO 1ATDC, IC 35ABDC, EO 20BBDC, EC 7BTDC specs for S/RS(911/83) are IO 38BTDC, IC 50ABDC, EO 40BBDC, EC 20ATDC

Wow, really disappointing duration numbers on the CIS cams. I was told my 74 2.7 had RS cams, but when I removed the covers to update the tensioners, they were the stock CIS cams. I knew they weren't at the point of purchase, but it is irritating what people will tell you when they think you don't know better.

I admit to a particular fondness for 2.7 cars. I had a '76 911S for many years and it was one of the most pleasant 911s to drive I have ever owned. Smooth, quiet, fast, reliable, and beautiful (Cockney brown!). Always regretted selling that car. I often wonder where it is today?
The 2.7 CIS cars got an undeservedly bad reputation way back when. It was due to a few readily fixed weaknesses, a bunch of ham-handed mechanics, and Bruce Anderson's writings. Always thought it was a shame, and happy to see they are coming into their own now. Why do you need a "long block"? Perhaps it would be more effective to properly repair whatever is wrong with yours. Be cautious about just buying a "long block" and thinking your troubles are over. It might have been done right and be a perfectly solid motor. But back in the day it was fashionable to gut the injection and change to carbs without always taking care of the real problems. |

Yeah I really do enjoy my 76' 911S (Alpine White), but as you know the 2.7 head stud problem she leaks too much oil. and rebuilding the original 2.7 is not a very cheap endeavor, so was hoping to find a decent runner 2.7 to put in (good luck right), I am selling her as I need to pay for Grad school and hate to part with her but it is what it is. So did not want to sell her with her leaking as much as she did, so dropped the engine out and looking to put another in with perhaps less miles on it.

Mileage on a "used/repaired/rebuilt" engine isn't the problem. HOW the repair was done is the problem. There is a right way to fix a 2.7, and, unfortunately, a myriad of wrong ways to "fix" a 2.7. You will be far better off putting the engine back in and selling the car as-is. You won't get much for it, but...

Yes Mr. Zimmermann I understand, what do you think a fair price would be for an excellent condition 76' 911S that comes with a core but just needs a rebuild?
thanks |

Your car is a very unusual situation, you might want to test the waters on e-Bay and see what happens! If you can establish exactly what's wrong with your engine it would be helpful. Are you sure that the head studs have pulled? Or does the car need only cam o-rings and oil return tube o-rings? Possibly an oil pressure switch and thermostat o-ring? "Oil leaks" doesn't always mean that a rebuild is necessary.

the late Bruce's advice to me - "put it on eBay at triple-reserve and see how high the bids come in - that will set your "fair price"
.

![]() Frankly, this advice applies to ANY "rebuilt" engine as that word means different things to different people.
