90 C2 on ebay...asking for trouble?
Price is low enough...but with the unknown mechanical issues..maybe I shouldn't even consider it?? It appears that the car is a repair shop. I'm thinking of calling the repair shop directly to get the scoop. what do you guys think?

For that price, if it remains low, it could be a good deal. As long as the engine and transmission are ok and it hasn't been severly wrecked, it might be a consideration. Unfortunately, to rule these out, I would look at it personally and be there for a PPI. Not sure how far "earth" is from New York.

Buy them, sell them

Even if you bought it, fixed the motor and cleaned it up, it'd still only be worth $20k, right? I don't know USA used-car values at all, but I'd assume one with that sort of mileage and being a '90 model,it's not going to be a popular car.
I think '90 models have problems with the flywheel, a lack of venting in the distributors, case-to-barrel and barrel-to-head oil leaks. If these weren't attended to already, you could easily pour a lot of money into that car without the prospect of seeing it back. You might be better off figuring out what it would cost to get it up to your idea of a "good" condition, then look for a car in that price range.

For $13K you could get one hell of a deal. The distributer vent cap is a $20 fix. The flywheel should have been addressed with the clutch.
Not sure what Cam - no good means - I had leaks around my Cam housings. If I end up getting the Cylinder to head/ head to case leaks (none yet at 80K) then I plan on doing a full rebuild with 3.8 or 4.0 L P & C's - or spring 25K for the RUF Evo conversion and end up with a 425hp C2. My mechanic says he can fix the cylinder head problem for around 6K - so 6K + 13 = 19K and you have a great car, all other things checking out. Hell for 7 K (5K for the engine, 2 K for install) you could have a replacement 3.6 dropped in there and rebuild the current one to TOP form. With the coupe - and C2 with coilovers you have a great start for a race car project. |

I got some more info from the owner...he says the mechanic told him the cam is no good because a leak down test shows low compression on two cylinders. I don't see how he can blame a cam on low compression from a leak down test
![]() I priced a replacement engine from my local garage, and they say $7,500 for a low miles used engine, including labor. The flywheel upgrade has NOT been done, according to the owner. But the dist. venting has been. Also, he says there are leaks at the cylinder heads. I would think a replacement engine would be the way to go. Maybe there is some room to work on that asking price.... I've got family in NY, so a short trip is doable, even from earth ![]()

it says in the ad "just got tune up and new clutch"
in almost all cases the clutch is replaced with the newer (flywheel upgrade) i think this guy is blowing sunshine. |

Daryl is right...blowing something...
Fixed the clutch and a tune-up and it has low compression on two cylinders? No flywheel update when the clutch was changed on a 130K car? What are the compression numbers? Leakdown doesn't always give the greatest indicator of a viable engine. have him take a cordless - or his cell phone into the shop and have him start it before you take any more of your time with it. For 7.5K for an engine replacement - and you could probably hawk the existing 3.6 for 3K or so on e-bay - you could still have a heck of a car. I know the c2's are sort of the bastard of the 911 family - along with the middle year 2.7's - but I love my c2 - and I dusted several carerras and SC's (and a 930) at the last autocross with it. I think I'll do one better and call the garage myself. My guess is it was "tuned up" to try to solve a problem that turned out to be more serious, and the owner doesn't want to shell out the $$ for repairs. As far as not upgrading the flywheel during clutch replacement..that is rather strange. I've gotta get some more answers on this one.
