Alternator noise
My 83SC just started making a noise that is comming from the alternator, I would think its the bearings?
Can you have the bearings replaced at a local shop? Can you fix them yourself? It is charging fine just the noise. Thanks in advance.

I just went through 2 alts b/c of bad bearings in the last year. Apparently there is a right way and the standard way to press in the bearings. I can't tell you who does what. Hopefully my third one will have been done the right way.
You can take it in and have it rebuilt, but this means the car will be down for a couple days, but you should save some money over a rebuilt outright. And as long as its appart you might as as well replace everything else that goes along with it. I've never replaced the bearings in one so I can't comment on that portion being a DIY project.

I just had my rebuilt yesterday and the grand total was $115.00. It took one day to rebuild and my was completly shot. It took me about 30 minutes to pull it all apart to get it out.
