M&K potential drone

I'm contemplating an M&K 1in/2out muffler for my Carrera purely for the sound (and some weight savings). Currently my car has been Wonged and has a Bursch cat bypass straight pipe. Has stock muffler with a second outlet nicely integrated in the passenger side. Primarily a nice weather DD street car.

So, can I expect the M&K 1in/2out to drone? Current setup does it a little but not too bad (nothing like my rebellious youth and Flowmaster Mustang GT days).

Any particular setup likely to drone more than another?

I have an early M&K one in two out and cat bypass on an 84 Carrera. No drone and I don't find it objectionably loud on the highway. I had a stock muffler on before this and it might have been a little quieter but was much heavier and only single out.

It's my understanding that the single inlet systems are not particularly prone to drone, regardless of the number of outlets. I've driven a local car with 1-in GT3 from M&K, it was a bit loud, but no droning that I could detect.

As stated the single inlets are less prone to the drone. The dual out is louder than single, which is what most folks want in a dual outlet configuration. If you want the look without the sound level we do have caps and baffles.

I bought a pre-muffler and 1 in 2 out from M&K and I love it. Reminds me a lot of a 60s V-8 sound. Get a lot of compliments at the track as being just loud enough without being obnoxious.

I went with the two in, one out M&K set-up with SSI's on an SC and I love it. Slight drone but manageable. It is a cab which makes the drone and sound exaggerated but I would highly recommend

I have Euro 84 with premuffler and M&K 1 in and 1 out and love the sound. Tad on the burble/ noisy side but hard pressed to change it. I AC it and DD on and off and looking to DE. Lots of compliments on my sound compared to other local 911s.

I run SSI & the 2in-1out "stock replacement" SS Dansk on a Euro SC motor. I get a little "harmonics" in the 2400-3000 range but a nice rumble at idle. Every design/configuration will probably have some "harmonics" and some may even have the "drone". Usually it is in a specific RPM range. Generally 2 outs tend to be louder, if that is what you are seeking. 2 outs look better but you may have to modify the bumper($$$) for the 2nd outlet. You can go to DE & club events to listen to other cars for 1st hand information. Make yourself happy.

I couldn't deal anymore with my 2 in 1 out M&K mk5. Very well built but it was giving me headaches and attracting too much attention. Kids wouldn't sit in the back either as they said it hurt their ears. This was OK for a quick Sunday drive but not what I wanted on a Monday morning in traffic on the way to work.

Does anyone know the db difference between the 2 in 1 out and a 1 in 1 out M&K? I want to buy another for my new 1984 for the quality but want less noise.

I installed the M&K Premuffler, 1 in 1 out, and a Steve Wong chip. I was impressed with the quality of the build and the sound. I thought at first it wasn't loud enough but now after 5K miles it sounds just right to me. Now I wouldn't want it any louder, but that's just me.
It has a sports car tone without the muscle car sound, a nice rumble at idle and relatively quiet until you up the RPMs. When I first installed the muffler I did notice a bit of a drone at 2800 - 3000 rpm when cruising but that seems to have disappeared with more miles on the muffler. The drone may have had to do with the muffler clamps as I did have to re-tighten them twice after install.
The M&K products are quality built and I am glad I installed them on my car.

I am running SSI with 2 in 2 out M&K Mk5 (plus SW 93 octane chip). I have to tell you there is no sweeter sound on planet earth than that system at 4-6K RPM. It is awe inspiring. At lower RPM, there is a bit of a drone, but, as I typically keep the R's above 2800, it is not an issue. One of the two outlets has a baffle, and I have experimented swapping that one to each side to see how it affects drone the sound. For me, the outlet with baffle installed on the passenger side seems best. Everyone has their own threshold for sound given their driving habits. My car is not a DD, so a more noticeable sound is really what I was after, and I got it for sure (along with noticeable performance). Good luck.

For what it's worth, my M&K 2-in, 2-out (used with SSI's) drones horribly below ~2800 RPM. "Booming" resonance in-cabin. I actually find myself keeping the RPM's up just to avoid it. Not exactly something I'm enjoying on a tired morning or evening commute. I've been looking into capping one side (making it effectively a 2-in, 1-out), or switching to a Dansk entirely (previously had great results with a Dansk on a 996) should that not get results.

So the census seems to be a 1 in / 2 out will be louder than stock but less likely to drone and wake up the authorities and the 2 in / 2 out can be outright obnoxious for normal street driving?

Agree, 1in2out will not drone like the 2in2out pipe. I have the 2in2out M&K.

I too had a 2/2 M&K on my 3.0 and had the same problem. I put these in each outlet and all was good:
Rocky Mountain Performance Quiet Riot Exhaust Baffles
These are used for the Harley crowd but worked great for my purpose and eliminated the drone.

Mark, could you post a clip of how the car sounds with the Quiet Riot?

Chris I would post on here and find someone in Atlanta with a M&K fitted and try and get to listen to their car. I have a Monty 1/2 out now which is a bit quieter but costs more.

Installation took about 20 minutes total, it is a simple as drilling a small 1/4" hole for the mounting screw in the tail pipe. I can take em out in a jiffy.

This ends the baffle question, they work.
