I have a occansional 'chafing' noise when I use my A/C. I have a '85 Carrera with factory installed A/C. It was serviced last year, and re-charged with R-12.
It sounds like a piece of metal chafing against a fan. My A/C system works fine even with this sound. The noise increases as I increase the output. It is quiet, though, when I run the fresh air blower without the A/C operating. The chafing sound originally started with a 'ticking' or 'tinkling' noise, then increased to the random chafing noise. My question: Is my fresh air blower kaput? Pardon my German, but where should look for problems? |

Evaporator blower motor inside the smuggler's box located in the front trunk. Remove blower assembly complete. Make sure there are no debris inside the fan housing, lubricate the front and rear bearings, then clean off excess lubricant. Re-install assembly, and make sure you have the flexible duct coupling with the (2) worm gear clamps on both the blower outlet and cabin inlet properly. If it is stiil noisy, replace moter. DO NOT USE IF MAKING NOISE AS IT CAN OVERHEAT MOTOR, WIRING, AND FUSE BLOCK!!! MINE IGNITED AT THE FUSE HOLDER WHEN I IGNORED THE NOISE.
