What are the differences between the euro-spec and US-spec cars that result in the increased HP for the euro-spec 911?

So what was different that resulted in the 231hp verses the 217hp engines?

Mostly cat in the exhaust vs a premuffler exhaust

Reading Peter Morgan's book on the 911 he states the compression ratio is 10.3:1 for the ROW cars vs the US' 9.8:1.
Regarding Bill's reference to the Swedish (and Switz/Aust per Morgan) version, Morgan states that they were tuned for reduced noise and emissions - but that is the extent of info.

930/20&26 10.3, no cat, no O sensor 930/26 10.3, no cat, no O sensor, w/ SAI 930/20 9.5, cat, this engine was also optionally used in Germany I mentioned the cat because it is the most easily recognized difference w/o obtaining the type #, the O sensor is installed at the intake of the cat, the premuffler versions will not have the O sensor

I haven't yet bothered to look for this on my Swiss market RoW, but I think there might actually be an O2 sensor. I don't even know the type number of the engine.
Another thing: Japanese market cars are often considered RoW cars, but they are a bit different all around. The engine is basically the same as North American cars, as far as I know (don't have the type number). The lighting is equivalent to RoW cars with the exception of no rear fog light, and headlights set up for left lane driving, the same as in the UK. The cars were all left hand drive, though, like US cars. The bumpers are the same as RoW. They also have a funky rear seat treatment with the upholstery running over the transmission tunnel. We get a few of these in Canada due to our less restrictive import laws as compared to the US.

Also IIRC the Swiss cars have different 2nd gear ratio ( longer) to quiet engine noise.

Yep, you got it. Actually the G50/02 (Swiss market) tranny is taller not only in second, but in EVERY gear than the North American /01, and taller in gears 1 through 4 on the /00 RoW transmission, but the same for fifth gear.
