H4 headlight alignment question ...

I just finished installation of my new H4 assemblies (thru Pelican), then went to my favorite wall for aiming. The top screw indeed adjusts up-and-down, but the lower screw seems to do nothing, even with many screwdriver turns. One would assume it to adjust side-to-side, but no.

So, is the lower screw just a decorative flourish, or is it supposed to do something?

BTW, here are some useful hints on doing the install, at least for me:

1. Apply masking tape to the paint adjacent to the lower mounting screw. MARK the exact location of the screw hole on the tape. This will help greatly with getting the hole on the chrome ring aligned properly.

2. Apply silicone grease to the rubber gasket before installation.

3. Move the wire springs in the H4s if needed to avoid interference in two spots: at the top, where the bucket tab engages the chrome ring lip, and at the bottom, where the mounting screw is. I needed to move mine.

4. Remove the rubber sleeve from the lower mounting screw in the H4 assembly, so it can be removed. Run the screw into the bucket bolt to make sure it works smoothly and the threads are OK. Note and remember the angle of the screw; it points up a fair amount. I used a long shafted screwdriver, and the handle was against the bumper.

5. To install the H4, first align the hole carefully with the tape mark. Then work to engage the chrome ring onto the bucket tab, at the top. Then install the screw, remembering the correct angle. Don't over tighten!

Lower screw will adjust beam left to right. Sitting in the car you should see over on the right side where the light cut off goes up and to the right. What you see as you adjust with the lower screw is the kicked up are move left to right. The Daniel Stern website has a good set of directions for adjusting H4s. -J
