Newbie intro & fusebox/alarm question
Gentlemen -
First, thanks in advance for the invaluable content and (mostly!) civil tone of posters. I was hoping for a quick intro, but in true form, I'm already seeking advice on my recently acquired '77 911s. Intro (feel free to skip if you simply wanna help a newbie out!): After a lifetime of admiring the icon, I (and my limited budget) took the plunge. My interest was (re-)sparked after I recently volunteered as a Class Host Representative at the Concours in Monterey. Through luck (and the help of a very generous friend), I spent the day with the 911 class, including the original 901 prototype (restored and gorgeous), cabrio prototype (unrestored, driven regularly), a special-order green coupe driven by the man himself (and his wife), a freshly restored 930, etc. Up and close with one-of-a-kind cars kept by truly classy and surprisingly approachable people. Very much a dream day. Upon returning to reality, I immediately called a friend/coworker who regularly parked his grey 911 next to my (space grey) e90 M3. I knew he had purchased the car from a long-time client (the original owner), who sold it up upon turning 80. An unmolested Northern Cali car with extensive records, including an engine rebuild with mods appropriate for (as I've come to learn through this forum) the woes specific to the '77. Original Fuchs, working sunroof, clean interior, and (being a '77) no rust. After telling my friend about Monterey, he offered me an extended test-drive. Keep it for a while, he said, see if you like it. He and his wife just had a baby girl, and he wasn't driving it much. You see where this is going... after a few weeks of dating (including reviewing the folder of old records, a PPI, and an obligatory drive with the wife to convince her of my "logic"), it was mine: ![]() ![]() Question: Everything has gone well (honeymoon period?), until the damn Ungo alarm acted up this morning. This has not happened in a month of driving the car. It is basically activating intermittently, and needs to be tossed. If I try to drive the car, the alarm kills the engine after 20-30 secs (wonderful on steep SF streets!). (It should be stated here that I can do basic car stuff but I'm not an electrician by any means.) Forum search reveals lots of helpful info, including the complete wiring diagram for the car. Based on these posts suggesting (1) extract it and (2) return wiring to OEM, I've started. Battery disconnected. Removing box from glove compartment - easily done. Removing ground and activation wires (to interior light, hood latch/light, etc) - done. Now I need to disconnect the alarm's tentacles from the fuel pump relay in fusebox. With the box out, the engine will crank but the fuel pump does not have power, presumably because the circuit has been disrupted by my removal of the brain. First pic below shows dark grey alarm wires traveling to/fro glovebox, via smuggler's compartment, to fusebox. These are now out. Second pic is obviously fusebox close-up, showing an accessory red line from battery, which travels behind the 2 black relay caps, come out to split (yellow splice), and enters 2 aftermarket fuses. One of these goes to the Ungo then comes back to the fuel pump connector marked "L" (I think). The other connects directly to the fuel pump relay attachment marked "X". I'm assuming this is how the Ungo hijacks power to the fuel pump. ![]() ![]() So, can someone give me a basic understanding of the OEM setup to the fuel pump relay? Does it need two power inputs, and if so, from where? Am I reading "L" and "X" correctly, and what do they mean?Is what I'm calling the "red accessory" line OEM, or should that be gone too? Thanks - any help would be greatly appreciated! (Yes, I plan on investing in a few shop manuals in the very near future). |
