1896 Carerra Pelican High Output alternator replacement fitting issue

Hi all,

I'm in the process of replacing the original alternator in my 86 Carerra with the Pelican High Output unit. Unfortunately after tightening the 6 alternator bolts to the fan shroud the fan ceased up - jammed.

I noticed that tightening the bolts also brought the alternator so far back into the shroud that the belt/pully would be obstructed by the shroud so it's almost as if the new part doesn't match my shroud properly and some kind of 'stops' need to be installed to prevent the alternator from mounting so far back into the shroud.

Does anyone have experience with this? Unfortunately Pelican is closed for weekend and I can't call them...

Thanks!

-Kale

OK... so I took the thing out of the shroud using a gear puller and compared it to my OEM unit.

It looks like I'm missing some spacers but no sign of anything on the Pelican website about this as an add-on part. Maybe they didn't send me all the parts? Take a look at the image and you'll see what's wrong here.

Anyone with experience with this I'd love to hear what you used to put proper spacing in there. I'm thinking this would be a very fine tolerance or I'm going to ruin the alternator bearings/etc if only slightly out of spec.

You got an SC alternator instead of the Carrera one. -J

ETA: The Bosch number for the Carrera alternator is AL401X (reman) and AL401N (new).

Different length alternators

This picture shows the Carrera alternator (long one on the right) and a 911SC alternator (short one on left.) They require different mounts, as JAR023 chart states.

Ouch.. what a pain. The good news is that this one wasn't my goof - I double checked the invoice and I ordered the correct part so they shipped the wrong unit.

I hope the return doesn't become a headache (these things are $$$) since I've mounted the thing and removed it from the shroud. I'm sure it's perfectly good but it's got a few scratches from the process.
