windshield air noise

My windshield is noisy at highway speeds. I can push in the top edge and it gets louder. I noticed the aluminum trim is coming out and it will not stay seated in the rubber anymore. I'm pretty sure its all original 1985.

I know I at least need a new gasket. Is new trim needed also? Is it best just to replace the windshield with new glass (safelite?) vs trying to reuse the old glass since its fairly pitted?

It looks like the trim got mangled at some point. I'd had success using a hammer to smooth out the trim, but it's the underside of the trim that's important to get straight. That sits in the groove molded into the seal.

You can just cut the old seal to remove the glass and trim. Putting the window back in with the new seal is a bit tricky. Look up the shoestring technique.

Can the pitting be polished out? I'd be inclined to use the original glass over anything else.

if you need to keep the seal, put a rope under the trim and pull the rope flushed to the seal while holding the trim down.. the trim will pull out without warping it... to put the trim back, put the rope in the groove where the trim fit into. While pulling the rope out, press the trim in place of the rope. Btw, you should put the seal on the glass first before pressing the trim in....but the other option (safelite) is also a great option.

new seal and new trim will make all the difference. Went through the same thing recently. Also found a little rust when the seal was out that I took care of. Be extremely careful when reinstalling old glass or have it professionally done since it tends to weaken. You may want to have it professionally done unless you are super competent and have a friend to help.

It's worth it to get all new. Windshield is a wear item, pitting and age reduce visibility and strength. I had them change it out years back on my '73 when I had rust at the corners repaired.

I replaced my windshield with the 993 version which is glued in and uses a different, better sealing system.

It cut air flow noise somewhat and looks cleaner....there are threads on it here if you want to use this option.
