so i figure it's time to address my ignition/door key situation.
non-original ignition key has the following info stamped on it: -taylor USA, P79Bm measures 2 1/8" in height, works fine. -non-original door key: ilco DM4, 1 7/8" in height, opens driver door, does not open pass door but can be inserted without turning. -door handles are correct for the year. i have read over the pelican article and suspect i will need to run thru the tumblers for the pass side. i question why i have two different style keys as i thought i should have ONE key that fits all, correct? if so which key is incorrect? where do i get replacement keys? i've only seen blanks avail for '69+. even if i re-do the tumbler pins i would still have 2 different keys. what's the deal? tia, bob |

Your ignition uses the 70 on style key, while your driver's door lock uses the standard, though NLA/hard to find NOS, early style key.
I have blanks, Taylors & Ilco's, if you need them. Scott 69 912 #23078 68 912 sunroof 67 912 project |

Oh - and I'm sure you caught this already but your drivers and passenger locks are different (same early 65-69 style, but different tumbler patterns = different keys). The PO may have replaced one of the handles and lock assemblies. You can have a key made for the passenger's side pretty easily - even though that doesn't save weight on your key ring. Good Luck - Scott

I went thru this key blank hassle a while back. I work in a hardware store and checked several suppliers for the correct blank, with limited success. The blank that came with the car is a Taylor P79B and works pretty well. I had the door handles apart and noticed this key wasn't getting the tumbler pins quite flush with the tumbler. I found that Ilco still makes a P79B blank, so I ordered a bag. They were too thick and needed to be filed down to fit into the lock. I did this and reworked the height of the sections of the key that raise the pins. The key works great. I am now planning to spend the big bucks for a genuine blank or two to make a good copy.
Scott, do you notice the Ilcos being too thick for the keyway, and are the Taylors any different? If you have a couple blanks that are a good fit, I would be interested in them. Thanks Ron 69 911E |

Hey Bob
http://www.jaggraveyard.com/keyquest.htm For keys for old Porsches, I just bought a couple for my 1968, they have pictures that allow you to check the size and if you e-mail they will measure things for you so you get the right key. Robert |

I went down to the local Ace Hardware store and had a couple made from the original. Have two sets of keys. One opens all doors and locks. One works just the ignition and door lock - used for valet parking.
