Paint to sample - help

Hello everybody,

I have just bought a 1989 911 Speedster, VIN number wpozzz91zks151835.

The tag located under the hood indicates paint no. L999 VD, which should mean a paint to sample. The plate located in the front trunk shows code no. 700-9-3 "schwarz metallic", but from my researches 700 is the code for solid black. The car appears as a darker shade of "slate gray".

Can anyone please help ?

Schwarz metallic is the default the put on the tag for special colors. At least that's what I've heard....

Here below some shots of the car, indoor and outdoor. It's not easy to catch the right tone of the colour. In real life it resembles more to the last two shots.

Looks too light to be black metallic. Got any higher resolution photos?

You can take it to a body that has a scanner. They will get a read on it and maybe match it to a Porsche color. No guarantee as it could be from another source. The scan will get a mix and you can get a touch up paint for it, if that's your goal.

I will take higher resolution shots in the next days, at the moment the car is at the shop doing repairing works on the hood.

My goal is to find the exact combination of colors to recreate the paint and doing some minor body works. From another thread on this board I found that the numbers "9-3" should mean that is a Herberts paint applied at the Porsche factory.

However I could not understand why Porsche applied a tag not coresponding to the actual color and apparently used a paint code ("700", solid black/ jet black) inconsistent with the color name "schwarz metallic" (which code should be "708") written on the front trunk plate.

The problem is that after the paint sees sunlight it changes. Your car looks very nice but there would be a small degree of paint fade.
So even if you could get the exact code it could be off anyway.

A pro painter should be able to match it perfectly.

Thank you, guys. Before starting the body works I will ask Porsche Italy or Porsche AG for more information about the color, at least to start with a certain paint producer.

But the more I consulted Porsche literature, the more the issue of the code/naming is still a mistery to me. Could it really be a Porsche error or it has some meaning regarding the colors combination of the paint ?

Lovely car, congratulations. What body work is required? Looks perfect from the photos.

Thank you, the car has some minor scratches on the front hood and a small crack in the fiberglass humps, so it needs partial repainting.

You are correct in that paint code L999VD would mean Paint to Sample.. however, you need to understand that when a a car is order in "Paint to Sample" it can mean a couple of things.

1. It could be a color used in earlier years by the factory (like gulf blue (70's) Auqamarine blue (50's) and now discontinued.

Or

2. It could be a non-Porsche color altogether as when ordering "Paint to Sample" it's any color you want from any manufacturer yet sprayed by Porsche.

3. With # 2 in mind, I would also look at BMW, Audi, and VW as they all offered a "schwartz metallic" at one time or another.

Taking higher resolution pictures will probably not help... you just can't recreate the level of detail, hue, and density etc.. in a picture for someone to accurately state what the color truely is... all we can due is guess, especially with a metallic!

There are just too many variables like time of day/lighting, and details related to the camera being used. Picture taken inside is probably even worse.

As someone else stated.. you need to have the paint scoped/scanned by either the body shop or paint supplier to get an accurate mix to match the paint.

Good luck getting finished-up.. it's a beautiful car. I've always like the 911 based speedsters!

Porsche had a "metallic black" paint available in 79-80, paint code 708. Looked dark grey when out of sunlight and light grey when in sunlight, maybe same color. You may want to pull trim and make sure car wasn't originally black.
