Early turbo tail needs fixing
Hey everyone! I have an early turbo tail that I am repairing. Most of the screws, that connect the rubber to the fiber glass tail, are rusted pretty bad and have broken off. I am thinking about splitting the rubber and fabricating a metal piece with new screws welded or soldered to it. My question is....is there any type of glue or adhesive I could use to connect the rubber to the fiber glass and have it be durable and hold? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advise.

Danger Danger - this is a slippery slope.
Mine was the same and the very act of pulling it apart destroyed it - the rubber wing internals were completely rusted - wish I never touched it. It took me 6 months to source a replacement

Fonzi, There is a thread on this very repair. The guy split the rubber and embedded a new piece of metal with studs in the rubber and epoxied it closed. Search for it. I believe he had very good results. There are plenty of adhesives that will bond the rubber to the FG and hold. West system 6/ten is one that comes to mind. The problem I believe is not going to be the bond but most likely the rubber it's self failing. Those rubber tails are heavy the original design with the embedded metal strip is designed to spread the weight over a large surface in the meat of the tail to create leverage to hold it in the proper position. Trying to hold it by bonding the surface to the FG I think you will find the rubber will quickly begin sag and tear.
Research some more before doing this. |

@ Drcoastline thanks for that advise...I figured as much. @ Vince yeah their not cheap though! @ Cknaak should I need to go that route I'll contact you back to see if it's still available. Thanks guys!!

This might be a better option: Replace the rubber part for 195$.

I have a complete single grill 1976 or 77 Carrera 3.0 tail with good rubber and grill 911 512 010 07. I haven,t removed the rubber but the studs appear OK and no swelling or breaks visible. I think it uses the same rubber as an early Turbo but complete would only be correct for a NON AC car.
