930 engine temps

Could someone speak to the fact that "930's run hotter"??? Could this be because of less fins on the cyl. thus less area for cooling? Kind of the less metal the less heat disapation? I'm just wondering here...my son has jast joined the ranks with an 86 911 and his overall just seems to run cooler...regards jer

930s do not run hotter than their N/A counterparts except when on boost for extended periods of time.

A bud of mine tracks his modified '78 930 often. He runs the stock loop cooler (if you can call a loop a cooler). The only time this car gets above 210F is when he sits a long time in 90+ temps with the A/C on. Even then the engine cools right down as soon as he gets moving. He has two (2) temp gages by the way.

RJM3,

What type of oil temps are you seeing in your 930? How many tick marks from the red zone?

On the contrary, i think 930's run cooler than N/A versions. Mine is rarely more than few needle widths over the white mark ... i never touched 9-o clock position...

930 temps

Hello I'm seeing temps above 9oclock position about midway say 10 oclock....this is expressway driving ambient temps of 95. I'm thinking of removing alt. and checking for nests or leaves....any suggestions welcome. regards jer

They are designed to survive prolonged periods of time on full boost. At full boost engine is producing substantially more heat than N/A engine, so oil cooling is made to cope with that.

When driving off boost, you shouldn't have problems with overheating.

Check for following things:

1. Is timing OK?
2. Is aux. oil cooler opening? (you can check it by touching front oil cooler when engine is warm, it should be hot)
3. Are oil-lines going to front oil-cooler pinched?
4. Is there any dirt/crud on cylinder fins obstructing passage of air?

You can always hoist your car into the air and use pressurised water-hose to try to blow out dirt from primary oil-cooler and cooling fins to begin with...

Cheers!

When off-boost, the 930 is naturally aspirated. When on-boost, however, more heat is created that the oil system must deal with. The cooling system is the same as all other NA 911s w/an external cooler; there's nothing additional on a 930, so more heat is generated under boost conditions. In the long run, it may not last as long; a function of more hp/torque and heat.

Take a look under the car next to the very warm turbo and inlet pipe. What's sitting a few inches away? (hint: the engine).
