My buddy is really leaning toward the 90 C2, he checked with the wrench that services the car and the vent kit and dist. belt check out but he does not know anything about the flywheel. What does this fix cost, if left alone what are the ramifacations and possible cost? This is a very sweet and well taken care of car. He has also got them down on the price some, but they want him to go ahead and get the 60,000 mile service done and are telling him that would be an additional 8-900 bucks. Always trying to sell somthing I guess.

don't worry about the flywheel. it may go bad sooner, but it may not. mine is working perfectly fine.

i would remove the engine tray and inspect for leaks, i didn't and i'm sorry.

Daryle, where are your oil leaks at ?

I have a '90 C4 Cab with some oil leaks. I replaced the 4 rocker valve covers during a valve clearance set up but 3 of the 4 covers still leak (new rubber gaskets of course).

Have you read or seen a better cover/gasket combo that would work better at keeping the oil in car and not on the garage floor ? I'm wondering if the newer 993 upper valve covers might be better ? The 993 uses a different lower cover however.

Also, have you noticed that the 993 rocker covers have a rubber insert gasket around each bolt hole and the 964 has a metal like material around each bolt hole ? Perhaps the 993 cover is better with those rubber "O" rings around each bolt's bore ?

there are leaks from the valve covers, leaks from the valve cover nuts, leaks above the exhaust where that exhaust pipe coupler with the hose clamps is, leaks from the rear of the engine is (towards rear of car) around the center.

i did some retorqueing and it seemed to stop and slow for a while, but now it seems to have gotten worse.

there are more leaks on the drivers side of the car. as soon as i get more time i am going to check it out better.

Flywheel fix could cost a couple of grand between labor and parts to fix. As to how long it will last, there are too numerous factors to be taken into account. Search the archives both here and at Rennlist and you will soon have more info on it.

I can't find that coupling your talking about. You mean oil is dumped into the exhaust ?

Have you had someone replace the 4 rocker covers yet ?

That rear main seal leak appears to be the $$$ one and if you get that fixed the engine out process makes the other leak repairs so much simplier. Also, have them replace the power steering seal too (when the engine is out).

How much oil are you losing per week ? I'm at about 1/3 qt a week.

Any 964 before 1991 is a potential oil leaker. Most of the leaks can be repaired with some time and money, the worse one is the head/cylinder leakage which is expensive.

Usual leaks are;

1. The oil line from left hand of crankcase to the oil filter adaptor. There is an update line with a braided section to fix this. This is probably the leak onto the exhaust.

2. Timing covers and housings. Replace all the gaskets and seals to fix this.

3. Power steering drive seal of the right hand camshaft. Make sure the o-ring on the alu casting is replaced.

4. Valve covers. Replace the seals and torqure fixings to correct torque.

5. Rocker shafts. Install o-rings.

6. Crankcase through-bolt o-rings. This is real expensive as you can imagine.

7. Oil return pipes. Install the two-piece replacements.

8. Oil thermostat not working. If the 'stat underneath the oil tank is not opening the engine will overheat and push oil into the intake. Always check that the right hand front fender is warm aftera long run.
